4人家族の住宅の計画である。敷地は、北側の山頂部に寺を構える裏山の足下にあり、南北に細長い。江戸時代には山陽道の宿場町の1つであった周辺は、幅員の狭い道路の両脇に木造家屋が点在し、当時の面影漂う街並みが今も残っている。そのため、前面道路に対しては宿場町にスケール感を併せつつ、敷地脇の空地から見える外観においては、街並みに対して圧迫感をもたせないことが肝要であると考えた。建物ヴォリュ—ムを比較的小さく抑えながら、そこに如何にして大きな気積を空間に内包させるか、これがここで取り組んだテーマであった。
全体は、拡幅の可能性のある計画道路側に鉄骨造による2層の棟、その奥に鉄筋コンクリート造による3層と4層を組み合わせた棟を配した構成とした。採光や通風の確保のため、各棟の平面や断面にずれや隙間を設けながら、それぞれが外気に有効に接し、また外気を挟みながら向き合う諸室関係をつくり出している。
2階に設けた主たる生活スペースは、リビングを2層棟に、ダイニングは3層棟にと離して配置し、トンネル状の動線空間で繋いでいる。こうして対峙する室には、床レベルをわずかにずらし、斜めに交錯する視線をつくることで、1階から3階までを含む大きな視覚による気積を内包させた。また奥行きを浅く抑えつつ天井を高く設定したリビングでは、エキスパンドメタルを介した大開口からの柔らかい光が纏い、あたかも木漏れ日に包まれたような内外が曖昧となった場が実現した。
軽やかな押出成型板とモノリシックなコンクリートを組み合わせ、大きな一枚壁になりがちな側面ファサードに異なる素材の混在させた立面は、エキスパンドメタルによる柔らかいファサードとともに、木製格子の点在する街並みに新しい表情を与えている。（吉田 豊）
A house with a large atmosphere in three buildings
This is a plan for a house for a family of four. The site is located at the foot of the mountain behind the temple at the top of the mountain on the north side and is long and narrow from north to south. In the Edo period, the area was one of the post towns along the Sanyo Road, and wooden houses are scattered on both sides of the narrow road, and the townscape still retains the atmosphere of those days. For this reason, we thought it was important to create a sense of scale with the lodging town on the front road while at the same time not creating a sense of oppression against the streetscape when viewed from the vacant lot beside the site. Therefore, the theme of this project was how to create a large volume of air in the space while keeping the building volume relatively small.
The entire structure consists of a two-story steel-frame building on the side of the planned road, which may be widened, and a three- and four-story reinforced concrete construction behind it. To secure lighting and ventilation, the plan and cross-section of each building have gaps and misalignments, and each building is effectively exposed to the outside air and faces each other with the outside air in between.
The main living spaces are located on the second floor, with the living room on the second floor and the dining room on the third floor, connected by a tunnel-like flow space. By shifting the floor level slightly and creating a diagonal intersection of lines of sight between the rooms facing each other in this way, a large visual volume encompassing the first and third floors is created. In the living room, where the ceiling is set high while keeping the depth shallow, the soft light from the large opening through the expanded metal creates a place where the inside and outside are ambiguous as to if enveloped by the sunlight filtering through the trees.
The combination of light extruded panels, monolithic concrete, and the mixture of different materials in the side facade, which tends to be a single large wall, gives a new expression to the streetscape dotted with wooden lattices with the soft facade made of expanded metal. (Yutaka Yoshida)
