店は都心の喧騒から離れた郊外の、近隣には畑や川や林などがある長閑な住宅街の幹線道路に面して建っている。いかにもロードサイド型大型飲食店風の既存建築をブックカフェへと全面改修を行った。クライアントはその地元の雑木林や川の保全活動に取り組んでおり、デザインを着手するにあたって 以下のようなことが伝えられた。
・食を通じ自然と人との共生、持続可能なライフスタイルを創造できるような場にしたい。
・生活感のある落ち着いた場所にし、子供から高齢者まで、特に持続可能な社会・地域を目指すためには子供を大切にしなければならない。
・所有している約4万冊の書籍を活かし「残していきたい自然、大切なもの」を感じ、考えてもらえるような図書館にしたい。
・食やみどりに関する体験の機会などを提供し、文化・芸術、知的なものに触れられる場にしたい。
・特に雑木林は武蔵野の原風景であったが、人との関係が崩れてしまった現在、雑木林と農業・食とを関係付けながら、人とみどりとの新たな可能性を見出していけるような場にしたい。
こういった思いを汲み取るべく雑木林や川原を歩き、その体験とクライアントがもつ思いをどのように具体化していけばよいか考えていった。地元の木をふんだんに使い親しみやすい場をつくるということだけではなく、雑木林を空間に表現し、川のイメージをどこかに入れる。こうしたクライアントからのリクエストへの答えを探していくことは創造的な設計行為が行えている喜びが感じられ、難しくもやりがいのある仕事となった。（近森 穣）
A book cafe that conveys the owner's thoughts with an interior reminiscent of rivers and thickets
It is located in the suburbs, far from the hustle and bustle of the city center, facing the main road in a quiet residential area with fields, rivers, and woods nearby.
The existing typical roadside-restaurant-style building has been completely renovated into a book cafe. The client is involved in the preservation activities of the local woods and river.
Before starting the design, the following was told to him.
・To create a place where people can live in harmony with nature and create a sustainable lifestyle, relating the woods (Zoukibayashi*) to agriculture and food.
*Zoukibayashi is the Japanese word for human-made woods that is not natural forest but are close to people’s daily lives and have been maintained and utilized through human care. It used to be the original landscape of this region, but now the relationship between humans and woods has collapsed.
・To create a place where people, from children to the elderly, can feel at home, especially children, to achieve a sustainable society and community.
・To use the owned 40,000 books to create a library where people can feel and think about nature and important things we want to preserve.
・To create a place that provides opportunities to experience food, greenery, culture, and art.
In order to understand the client’s thoughts, the designer walked through the woods and the riverside and had been thinking about how to express the client’s thoughts in a concrete form.
Not only creating a friendly place with plenty of wood but also expressing Zoukibayashi in the space and including the inspiration of the river somewhere were requested. Finding the answers to these requests was an enjoyable challenge for the designer. (Joe Chikamori)
