A one-story house that is loosely separated from the embankment and brings in nature
The scenery changes drastically when you pass through a residential area and reach the bank of the Tama River. The shining surface of the water, the sound of the water, the distant mountains that can be seen, including Mt. Fuji, and a wide sky that occupies more than half of the field of view. This architecture faces a large natural environment that makes us aware of the earth even though it is located in the city.
The front road (embankment) is 2m higher than the site, and many people take walks and drive and cycle. In order to confront the landscape beyond the human scale and to solve the problem of being exposed to the view from the embankment on the south side, a mortar-finished structural wall was used to enclose the perimeter of the building, and the living space covered lined with soft-textured Sawara cypress, is wrapped inside. The layering of the structural wall as an outer shell and the partition wall for the inner living space creates a space with a sense of depth and cut off the view from the embankment.
Although the building is a one-story structure, the eaves height of the south side is 4.6m to provide a place to see the scene over the embankment from the inside of the house. The space under the 1.5-story-high single-ply roof on the south side, where the light garden is located, draws the winter afternoon light deep into the room and allows us to admire a view of the southern sky from inside. The shadows created by the structural walls of the perimeter, which are open because of the glass windows, stand out as a well-defined façade in the horizontally spreading landscape of the Tama River.
On the south side, near the embankment, a roofed outdoor space, entrance, and earthen floor are located. To the north of it, a light garden was created to let in light and wind, and the dining room, kitchen, and free space surround this garden. On the north side, private rooms such as a bedroom, a washroom, a bathroom, and a storage room are arranged in a row and covered with a low roof. (Hiroshi Ito)
