敷地は、都内の駅の商店街を抜け、徐々に住宅街へと変わる場所に位置する。道路向かいの南側に中学校、西側にマンション、並びの角地にオープンしたばかりの保育園がある。昔ながらの商店街と住宅街が時代と共に移り変わり、いろいろなビルディングタイプ、スケールの建物が混在しつつある中で、比較的開けた環境のT字路角地である。
建主の要望は、ここに住みながら自ら稽古・指導し、道場の運営を兼務できる柔道場をつくること。28坪程度の敷地に可能な限り大きな気積の空間を、というリクエストに対し、道場を半地下に設け、その上に2世帯の住宅を載せた構成を提案した。外観は、3方からの斜線規制による勾配屋根のよく見慣れた家が少しだけ腰高に建つ高床式住居である。
道路からもよく見え開放的な7×7mの無柱空間の道場を実現するために、屋根部分の井桁状に架けた大梁から吊り下げる。この構造により、軽く浮かんだ2階建てのボリュームの下にぽっかりとサンクンガーデンのような大きなヴォイドが生まれた。閑静な住宅街にあって眼下に広がるこの大きな空間は、施工中から歩行者を惹きつけ、「ここには何ができるの？」と幾度となく質問された。完成後も偶然歩いていて見つけたという道場の予約者が来たという。
道場から見上げると学校の桜並木・向かいのマンションの樹木が窓一面に広がり、道路からは元気いっぱいの子供たちの活動を行き交う人々が覗き込む。路面に設けたベンチに腰掛け稽古に励む子供たちを見守る親たちがいる。半年が経過し、思いがけず道行く人々の興味を惹きつける様子を見て、柔道に限らず、ヨガとピラティス教室も始め、住まい手も今後、畳の上での英会話やプログラミング教室など、新たな構想が膨らんでいるとのこと。ゆくゆくは「街の寺子屋」のような場所になればいいと思い始めている。
道場とは「道」を極めるための「場」のことである。活動が始まると、向かいの樹木の存在も巻き込んで外側のT字路の様子が広場的環境を呈してきた。道場がきっかけになり、辺り一帯が文字通り「道」を極めた「場」として街に溶け込み、地域に根付いていくことを期待している。（若松 均）
Terakoya spreads out in the basement of a residential area
The site is located in a neighborhood that gradually turns into a residential area after passing through the shopping district of a metropolitan station. Across the street is a junior high school on the south side, an apartment building on the west side, and a nursery school that has just opened on the corner. The site is a T-junction corner lot in a relatively open environment, where traditional shopping and residential areas have changed with the times, and buildings of various types and scales are mixed together.
The client’s request was to build a judo hall where he could live, practice, and teach judo, and also manage the dojo. In response to the request for a space with as large an area as possible on a site of about 28 tsubo (about 560 square meters), we proposed a configuration with the dojo half underground and a two-family house above it. The house’s exterior is stilt with a familiar sloping roof due to the diagonal restrictions from three sides.
In order to realize a 7 x 7 m pillarless space dojo that is well visible from the street and open, the house is suspended from a large beam erected in the shape of a well in the roof section. This structure created a large sunken garden-like void under the lightly floating two-story volume. This large space spreading out below in a quiet residential area attracted pedestrians during the construction, and they asked many times, “What can you do here? They asked many times, “What can we do here? Even after its completion, people came to make reservations for the dojo they had found while walking by chance.
Looking up from the dojo, one can see the rows of cherry trees at the school, and the trees of the apartment building across the street, and people passing by can see the energetic children’s activities from the street. Parents sit on benches set up on the street and watch over their children as they work hard. After half a year, the children’s activities have unexpectedly attracted the interest of passersby, and the residents have started yoga and Pilates classes in addition to judo and have new plans for English conversation and programming classes on tatami mats. Eventually, the residents are beginning to hope that the dojo will become a kind of “terakoya” in the city.
A dojo is a “place” for mastering the “way. As activities began, the T-junction on the outside began to take on the appearance of a plaza-like environment, involving the presence of the trees across the street. We hope the dojo will become a catalyst for the entire area to blend into the town as a “place” for mastering the “way” and taking root in the community. (Hitoshi Wakamatsu)
