旧北国街道沿い（牟礼宿）に面して長く商店を営まれてきた方より場所と記憶を引き継ぎ、コーヒースタンドと町内外の人々が交差する新しい場所をつくるプロジェクト。
立地は、旧牟礼村と旧三水村の境界線（エッジ）である鳥居川に近い場所。かつて人・モノ・情報が行き交った宿場町の背景をもつこの場所が、人が集まるためのハブになり暮らしの拠り所になっていってほしいと想像しながら設計を担当した。
元宿場町で元タバコ屋の間口からコーヒーを提供する日常の風景からは、建築の役割を変えて時代に順応することの潔さがある。夕方には、左から小学生が帰宅し、右から中学生が帰宅していく。店長がそっと話しかけながら地域の見守りの機能を果たしているシーンにはグッとくる。今後、町内の空き家リノベーションの動きが活発化し公民連携の兆しが見え、まちにどのような化学変化が連鎖していくのか、研究と実践の両輪で取り組むため、2階の小さな部屋を自身のアトリエとして設えた。今は建築全体が小さな複合施設として進化していく途中にある。（小松剛之）
A coffee stand and smallest cultural complex that carries on the memory of a tobacco shop
This project aims to create a new space where a coffee stand and people from inside and outside the town intersect, taking over the location and memories of a long-time store owner along the former Hokkoku Kaido (Murejuku).
The location is near the Torii River, which is the boundary line (edge) between the former Mure Village and the former Sansui Village. We designed the building with the hope that this place, which has the background of an inn town where people, goods, and information used to come and go, would become a hub for people to gather and a place where people can live.
The everyday scene of serving coffee from the frontage of a former tobacco shop in a former inn town shows the grace of adapting to the times by changing the role of architecture. In the evening, elementary school students return home from the left and junior high school students from the right. The scene of the manager gently talking to them and fulfilling the function of watching over the community is very moving. In the future, as the renovation of vacant houses in the town becomes more active and there are signs of public-private partnerships, we would like to see what kind of chemical changes will be created in the city through both research and practice.
