A residence where silence floats
Located just a short distance from the center of Tokushima City, the house quietly emerges in a corner of the quiet downtown area, where the bustling sounds of the city gradually fade away as the Shinmachi River flows peacefully to the south. From the street, the first floor, constructed of heavy concrete, is topped by a light, wooden second floor that appears to float in the air. This contrast naturally draws the eye and instills a quiet sense of tension in the viewer.
The approach to the entrance is a semi-outdoor space surrounded by plants under the eaves. The hard texture of the concrete harmonizes with the softness of the greenery, blurring the boundary between inside and outside. With each step on the stone pavement, the sound of the wind and the rustling of leaves reach the ears, gently guiding the mind into a world of tranquility away from the hustle and bustle.
The Japanese-style room quietly nestled at the back of the first floor exudes a serene atmosphere, as if breathing. Despite being surrounded by concrete, natural materials like tatami mats and shoji screens blend softly into the space, casting subtle patterns of light and shadow on the walls and floors. The light filtering through the shoji screens is so gentle it seems to make one forget the passage of time, as if the space itself embodies the very essence of “silence.”
As you ascend the stairs, the second floor unfolds, filled with the scent and warmth of wood. The floating-like structure not only brings physical lightness but also a sense of mental openness. A courtyard is situated at the center, blocking surrounding views and allowing time to flow as if one with nature, even within the city. Opening the large glass windows lets wind and light gently circulate through the interior, blending the inside and outside into a unified whole.
This house is a quiet vessel that embraces the convenience of the city and the tranquility of nature. The heaviness of concrete and the softness of wood, shadows and light, closure and openness, inside and outside—these contrasting elements coexist in a delicate balance, creating an atmosphere that could be described as “floating silence.” Living here, daily life begins to breathe quietly, and the mind naturally finds its rhythm. It is as if life itself has become one with the architecture, floating quietly. (Kazunori Tenkyu)
