東京谷中の木造密集地に建つ狭小住宅。周囲には戦災を逃れた社寺も多く残っており、準防火地域に指定されている。いわゆる都市型住宅というジェネリックな立地条件に対し、あえて10°という角度を持ち込むことで画一的な町並みにささやかな異質性を呼び込む計画とした。
外観は周辺住戸と馴染むようにバルコニーやピロティーの寸法感を踏襲したシンプルな矩形とし、入れ子状の内壁を10°捩ることで、隅部に壁の厚みが裂けてできたような不思議な三角形の気積が生まれる。そこを階段室や吹き抜け、バルコニーとすることで、採光や通風、断熱、動線として機能するだけでなく、外部環境との距離感を調停する内でも外でもない第三の空間として位置付けた。
また、三角形の気積が光溜まりとなり、視覚的に実際の面積以上の広さをもたらしている。さらに、3階建ては相対的に上下移動が多くなるが、暗がりの下階から明るい上階へと末広がりな階段形状によって、単調になりがちな移動空間に抑揚をもたせた。
三方を建物に囲まれた狭小地に対して、内部を10°よじるという一手により、明るさとプライバシーを両立させ、見慣れた住宅の風景を一変させる試みである。（宮崎晃吉）
A narrow house with a 10° twist creates extra space
A small wooden house is located in a densely populated area of Yanaka, Tokyo. The surrounding area is home to many temples and shrines that survived the war, and it is designated as a quasi-fireproof zone. Rather than conforming to the generic location conditions of so-called urban housing, the plan was to introduce a 10° angle to bring a subtle sense of diversity to the uniform streetscape.
The exterior adopts a simple rectangular form that harmonizes with surrounding residences, incorporating the dimensions of balconies and pilotis. By twisting the nested interior walls by 10°, a mysterious triangular volume emerges at the corners, resembling a split in the wall thickness. These spaces are utilized as stairwells, atria, and balconies, serving not only functional purposes such as natural light, ventilation, insulation, and circulation but also positioning them as a third space that mediates the distance between the interior and exterior environments.
Additionally, the triangular voids act as light wells, visually expanding the perceived space beyond its actual dimensions. Furthermore, while a three-story building inherently involves more vertical movement, the flared staircase shape—leading from the darker lower floors to the brighter upper floors—adds rhythm to what could otherwise be a monotonous movement space.
On a narrow lot surrounded on three sides by buildings, the decision to twist the interior by 10° achieves both brightness and privacy, transforming the familiar residential landscape into something entirely new. (Mitsuyoshi Miyazaki)
