(English below)

A forest-like house with intermediate layers for lighting and expansiveness

This residence is an architecture in which the first and second floors are separated, with an intermediate layer of 360°openings between them.

The site is a flagpole lot in an area of Tokyo with a high density of wooden houses. This configuration was adopted to overcome the extreme difficulty of achieving both light and privacy and to create a bright and expansive space.

The first floor is a spacious space with a kitchen, dining room, sofa space, shared study, Japanese-style room, and other common uses, while the second floor is a space with small private rooms without storage and a storage room that also serves as a flow line. By minimizing the number of private rooms and making all use common except for beds, we made it easy to replace the users of private rooms and provided redundancy that can flexibly respond to changes in the family structure.

In the middle level, where all structural walls were eliminated, multiple braces were installed to cope with horizontal forces. As a result, the spacious first floor is flooded with light from the mixed-brace, branch-like structure, while the second floor, a series of small spaces, is a forest-like architecture as a whole, with pillars penetrating the small rooms.

If the only purpose of the building were to separate the first and second floors, it would be purer to have no pillars or braces. However, in this case, by daring to show the wooden structure, a human scale was given to the spacious living room, and a space was created in which the presence of wood could be tasted as a structural material and material. This is an attempt to integrate the presence of immediate objects into the spatial composition rather than to architecturally create only an abstract spatial composition. (Yuri Naruse + Jun Inokuma)
