都市には、その存在や美観を無視しがちな建物が数多く存在する。多くは特定の機能を担い、都市インフラの一部として機能している。高架橋から小さなパビリオンにいたるまで、私たちは日々それらの脇を通り過ぎているが、実のところ私たちの生活様式はそれらによって形づくられている。
限られた予算ゆえ、こうした日常の建築に革新的デザインが与えられることは稀である。本プロジェクトのクライアントは、次世代のガソリンスタンドの再考と、同時に地域の文脈や歴史への応答を求めた。課題は、トポロジーを再考しつつ機能を維持する方法、そしてガソリンスタンドの空間体験をいかに再定義するかにある。
計画地は、中国有数の観光島である福建省平潭島に位置する。年間を通じて湿潤かつ強風の気候で、息を呑む海景が広がる。敷地は福州市と平潭島を結ぶ主要道路・金井湾幹線道路に面し、面積は約3,000m²で小山の麓に隣接する。ガソリンスタンドは車両動線、燃料貯蔵、高さ制限など多くの制約を受ける施設である。
設計着手に先立ち、ガソリンスタンドの空間構成におけるトポロジーを検討した。一般的なスタンドは、大きな平坦な鋼構造屋根と箱型の付属棟からなる。一方で、近代にはシェル構造や傘構造などコンクリートを用いた意欲的な事例も多い。にもかかわらず、なぜ現代の多くは巨大な平屋根に収斂しているのか。なぜ多くのスタンドが立地や歴史に言及しない均質な外観なのか。
用途を踏まえ、設計課題は「単一の屋根」と「小規模な建物（事務所・売店・トイレなど）」へと単純化できる。屋根デザインは福建の伝統的集落住居に着想を得て、複数の曲線をシームレスに接続した。これにより異なる高さの空間階層を生み、屋根と付属棟を一体の建築として統合している。屋根は長スパンの鋼構造とし、採光開口を設けることで、美術館的な空間体験をもたらす。売店外壁は煉瓦張りとし、これも伝統的集落の意匠に呼応する。
さらに、太陽光パネルや雨水再利用などの環境配慮機能を備える。屋根形状はこれらシステムと高い統合性をもち、単なる意匠にとどまらない性能を担保する。
利用者が長時間滞在する施設ではないが、独特の屋根形状と採光は、給油という行為にささやかな愉しさを付与するであろう。

A petrol station with a corrugated roof responding to regional character and history
In the city, there are many buildings which we may ignore their existence or aesthetics. Most of them having specific functions and served as part of infrastructure of the city. From flyover bridges to small pavilions, we may pass by them everyday and yet they shapes our way of living.
Most of them due to limited budgets, we hardly find innovative design for these daily life architecture. The client of project wishes us to rethink the new generation of petrol stations and same time responses to local context and history. The challenges of our project is how to rethink the topology but maintain functionality? How we redefine the spatial experiences of petrol stations?
The project is located at pingtan island at fujian province, which is one of biggest tourist islands in China. It has stunning seaviews and humid/windy local climate during the year. Our project site is located at Jinjing Bay main road, where is major road linking Fuzhou and Pingtan. Site area is around 3000m2 and next to a small mountain. Petrol stations have very confined spatial organisation such as vehicle circulation, petrol storage or height requirements.
Before we start the design of project, we studied the topologies of petrol stations on their spatial organizations. Commonly the stations are designed with big flat steel structural roofs and boxy additions. We also found many modern stations using concrete structures, such as shell or umbrella structure. The variety of concrete structures were representing ambitious ideas for petrol stations at the modern age. But why we only have big flat roofs today? Why all petrol stations almost looks identical and without any reference to site or history?
Based on specific usage, we may simplify the design task as one single roof and one small building (staff office, supermarket and toilet etc ). The roof design is inspired from traditional village houses in Fujian Province, which is multiple curves seamlessly connected. With this design language, we may create different heights for spatial hierarchy and unify the roof and supporting building as one architecture. The roof is made with long span steel structure and openings are reserved for daylights, it creates museum like space for this petrol station. The external wall of supermarket is cladded with bricks which is also inspired from the traditional village.
The station also equipped with environmental features such as solar panel and rain water recycle systems. The roof shape is highly incorporated with these systems and not merely aesthetic concerns.
Although we may not stay so long at the station, but the unique roof shape and daylighting shall enhance the joyful experience of petrol intake.
