かつて新潟県のタクシー会社にとって一番の利用客は夜の繁華街からの帰宅者だった。ところが現在は少子高齢化が進み、一番多いのは病院への通院客になっている。
近年では、新幹線駅からリゾートホテル・スキー場へのインバウンド客が増加傾向にある。2015年に北陸新幹線が開業して以降、上越妙高駅からのタクシー客は大幅に増加した。しかし、冬寒く夏暑い当地にありながら、空調設備が整った待合空間は不十分な状況であった。
そこで、タクシー利用客の快適性向上を目指し、社長が自費を投じて整備することになった。
新潟の鉛色の冬空の下で、暖かく迎えてくれるウェルカム感を表現したい。そこで天井は赤く染め上げ、大きな開口部から暖かさが駅前ロータリーに滲み出る効果を狙った。ソファ席、仕事もできるテーブル席、ホテルのフロントのようなカウンターや書棚、暖炉を設置し、お客様を迎える。
地域産業への恩返しをしたいという社長の想いから、新潟県産木材を積極的に活用した木造で建築することにした。ところが、耐震に必要な壁面量が不足してしまうため、木造では積雪に耐えられる大きな開口部をつくることは難しい。そこで、バドミントンの羽根のような三翼型の木造柱を開発し、力学上必要な壁量を確保した。
積雪が多い自然環境に耐えるため、屋根はシンプルな片流れ式のガルバリウム仕上げ、外壁は経年劣化も美しいコールテン鋼による仕上げとし、木造の空間と美しい対比を演出した。
建築構造で開放感と壁量確保を両立させ、暖かく開放的な空間が利用客を包み込んでいる。（川西康之、姫野智宏）
A taxi lounge in front of the station that warmly welcomes customers with a large opening made of local wood pillars
In the past, the most important customers for cab companies in Niigata Prefecture were those returning home from the downtown area at night. However, nowadays, with the declining birthrate and aging population, the most common customers are hospital visitors.
In recent years, the number of inbound visitors from Shinkansen stations to resort hotels and ski resorts has been rising; since the Hokuriku Shinkansen in 2015, the number of cab passengers has increased from Joetsumyoko Station has increased significantly. However, the air-conditioned waiting area was inadequate, despite the fact that it was located with cold winters and hot summers.
Therefore, the company’s president decided to invest his own money to improve the comfort of cab passengers.
I wanted to express a warm welcome under the leaden winter sky of Niigata. The ceiling was dyed red to create warmth exuding from the large opening into the rotary in front of the station. The restaurant has sofas, tables for working, a counter like a hotel reception desk, bookshelves, and a fireplace to welcome customers.
The company’s president wanted to give back to the local industry, so he decided to build the building with wood, actively using lumber from Niigata Prefecture. However, it was difficult to create large openings that could withstand snowfall with wood because the wall surface required for earthquake resistance was insufficient. So we developed a three-winged wooden pillar like a badminton shuttlecock to secure the mechanically necessary wall volume to solve this problem.
To withstand the natural environment of heavy snowfall, the roof is a simple single-flow galvalume finish. The exterior walls are finished in Corten steel, which looks beautiful even with age, creating a beautiful contrast to the wooden space.
