A multi-generational home that expands the living space and renews life for future generations
This project involves placing a small steel-frame structure atop an 18-year-old reinforced concrete (RC) mixed-use residential and commercial building, situated within a cityscape lined with rectangular RC boxes.
The small structure appears on the roof as a stable, polyhedral form created using steel diagonal bracing and triangular surfaces. Furthermore, the design was planned so that the weight of the added steel frame is offset by the weight saved from removing the existing roof deck. Against the backdrop of the existing RC structure’s solid world of horizontal and vertical beams and columns, the wooden-finished ceiling surfaces on the 3rd and 4th floors—which evoke a roof-like quality beyond mere horizontal and vertical lines, thanks to the lightness of the steel frame—create a three-dimensional impression. Spanning this contrasting structure, a large counter integrated with a table, along with the floor finishes and staircase, lends a sense of spaciousness to daily life. By adding a light, three-dimensional steel structure to the former rooftop area, an interior space with an openness contrasting with the reinforced concrete structure is created.
Furthermore, to ensure the architecture supports urban life—where a wide variety of activities take place—the design process involved detailed consultations regarding daily life and parent-child relationships. Rather than isolating households, the design fosters a form of coexistence in which residents move freely between floors. It is an architecture conceived with the vision that the building, originally constructed by the parents’ generation, will serve as a foundation for subsequent generations to adapt, update, and continue living in over time.
