千葉県いすみ市。東京オリンピックのサーフィン競技の会場に隣接する太東ビーチに面する高台にこの建築は建つ。
太東岬はその海蝕によって砂を生み出し、美しい九十九里浜の海岸線を形成してきた歴史がある。現在、九十九里浜には諸々の事由により砂の供給が減り、海岸線の担保にさまざまな施策が講じられていることを知った。
1つの建築にその問題を解消する力はないが、せめてこの希少な景観との融和をテーマに、削られた岩礁が特徴的な太東海岸の景観と一体となった建築がつくれないものかと思案した。
崖要件や構造耐力また塩害も鑑みたうえで、350mm角のスレンダーなRC構造フレームを基調に所要の空間を確保。優美に湾曲する九十九里の海岸線に呼応する平面形状を敷地なりに展開し、北に望む海と敷地内の南庭をつなげるべく、外部空間の貫入（プール）や南北貫通を意識したプランニングがなされている。
ローカルサーファーという言葉がある。地元の波を共有するための仁義的意味合いもあるが、自分達のエリア（地域）を大切にするというポジティブな意識に寄り添うように、周囲の環境の良化に貢献する建築に成長していくことを願って設計に力を込めた。
太東に新しい窓を穿ちそこから見える景観の価値、すなわち海岸線を有する地方都市の環境価値を再構築する新しい開口部。〈HOTEL THE MADO〉という名には、その意味が込められている。

Isumi City, Chiba Prefecture. This building stands on a hill overlooking Taito Beach, which is adjacent to the venue for the surfing competition at the Tokyo Olympics.
Cape Taito has a history of producing sand through sea erosion, shaping the beautiful coastline of Kujukuri Beach. I learned that, for various reasons, the supply of sand to Kujukuri Beach has decreased, and various measures are being taken to preserve the coastline.
While a single building cannot solve this problem on its own, I wondered if it might be possible to create a structure that harmonizes with this rare landscape—specifically, one that blends seamlessly with the distinctive scenery of the Taito coast, characterized by its eroded rocky reefs.
Considering cliff-related requirements, structural strength, and salt damage, the design secures the necessary space with a slender 350mm-square reinforced concrete frame as its foundation. The floor plan responds to the gracefully curving coastline of Kujukuri, while the layout connects the sea to the north with the south garden on the site, incorporating an outdoor pool and a north-south axis that runs through the building.
There is a term called “local surfer.” While this term carries a sense of honor and respect for sharing the local waves, we poured our energy into the design, hoping the building would evolve into one that contributes to improving the surrounding environment, in harmony with the positive mindset of cherishing one’s own area (community).
We named it 〈HOTEL THE MADO〉 to signify a new opening that redefines the value of the landscape visible through this new window in Taitō—that is, the environmental value of a regional city with a coastline.
