外から見ても、何階建てか分からない。2階の個室群と通路側の窓を、大屋根にカットされたように操作した結果だ。〈through house〉は、COGITEによる住宅。施主と共有していた、一つの塊のように単純でシンプルな形態を実現しながら、床組のないコンクリート土間直押さえの床と大開口の木製サッシで、室内からそのまま庭へ抜けられるようにした。
コンクリート土間直押さえの床と地続きの庭の先には、抜けた景色が広がる。窓をあけてヨイショと地面に足を下ろすような段差があるのが、木造住宅の基本的な断面構成であるが、この住宅には床組がないので、地面との差はほぼない。そのまま走り抜けられるのだ。
そして、その中と外を仕切る窓には大開口の木製サッシ、ヘーべシーべを採用している。値は張るが、ここぞという場所にはもってこいだ。
2階の個室群側と通路側、いずれの窓も大屋根にカットされたようなデザイン的操作を行なっているので、外から見ると何階建てか分からない。別に何階建てか分からないような住宅を目指して設計したわけではなく、1つの塊のようにシンプルな形態にすることが、施主と共有していた方向性だったので、それを実現できたと思っている。

Beyond the concrete floor—which rests directly on the ground—the garden flows seamlessly into it, and an unobstructed view stretches out. While a typical cross-sectional layout of a wooden house features a step where you open the window and step down onto the ground with a “heave-ho,” this house has no floor framing, so the floor and the ground are virtually at the same level. You can run right through.
Furthermore, the windows that separate the interior from the exterior feature large wooden sash frames—the “Heve-Sibe” style. Although these frames are expensive, they are ideal for key locations.
Both the windows in the second-floor private rooms and those along the hallway feature a design that makes it look as if they were cut into the large roof, making it impossible to tell from the outside how many stories the house has. We didn’t specifically aim to design a house where the number of stories was unclear; instead, we shared with the client a direction toward a simple, uncluttered form that looked like a single solid block, and I believe we succeeded.
