東京表参道。欅の並木道から枝分れした「ロハス通り」と呼ばれる幅員4mの道沿いに計画地は位置する。そこにはかつて、クレヨンハウスという絵本とオーガニック食材のお店があった。通りに面したサンクンガーデンには豊かな緑が生い茂り、都市の喧騒の中にぽっかりと浮かぶ森のような空間は、40年ものあいだ人々に愛されてきた。
〈GREENTERRACE 表参道〉を設計するにあたってまず考えたのは、この場所がもつ”みどりの記憶”を継承できないかということ。そしてバトンを受け取るからには、表参道の街歩きがもっと楽しくなるような、都市のダイナミズムを取り込んだ立体的な森をつくりたい。ということだった。
この建物はおおきな樹木のような成り立ちをしている。根と幹にあたる地下1階地上4階のメインフレームは鉄骨とRCによるハイブリッド構造。洞窟のような大空間をもつ地下のRCフレームは1・2階でSRC柱と鉄骨梁、3・4階で開放的なスチールフレームへと姿を変え、上層階にいくにつれて開かれていく眺望と呼応する。樹冠にあたるメインフレームの外周部には植物が生い茂るテラスと軽快な屋外階段が取付き、行き止まりのない回遊動線をつくり出す。
植生は階ごとに異なる。地上から屋上に掛けて、在来種中心の深緑から外来種を含む浅緑へ、多様な植物が共存しながらファサードにみどりのグラデーションを絵描く。植物への灌水にはテラスから柱を経由して地下に貯留された雨水が、階段や外構の舗装にはクレヨンハウスのレンガタイルがそれぞれ再利用されている。
ここでは雨や素材も循環している。誰もが訪れることのできるテラスや階段には、すべての階にアンモナイトや水晶を種石としたテラゾー仕上げのベンチを設けた。ここは街歩きを楽しむ人々が時折ふらっと立ち寄り、地下に空を映し出すインタラクションアートや道標のような鉄のアートを眺めながら、都市の中で束の間1人になれるパブリックスペースとなる。
〈GREENTERRACE 表参道〉を訪れる人々は、欅の並木道から遊歩道を経由してグランドレベルのピロティへと導かれ、植物に招かれるようにして空中庭園を立体的に散策し、ルーフトップへと至る。そこからは100年前人の手によってつくられ、時と共に成熟した明治神宮の森が見える。2024年が、ここに建築と植物が分かち難く共存する100年の物語のはじまりの年となることを心から願いたい。

A complex facility like a great tree, inheriting the memory of greenery
Tokyo Omotesando. The site is located along a 4-meter-wide street branching off the zelkova-tree-lined avenue known as “Lohas Street.” There once stood Crayon House, a shop selling picture books and organic ingredients. Its sunken garden, facing the street, was lush with abundant greenery, creating a forest-like space floating amid the urban bustle, cherished by people for 40 years.
When designing GREENTERRACE Omotesando, our first consideration was whether we could inherit this place’s “green memory.” And since we were taking up the baton, we wanted to create a three-dimensional forest that incorporates the city’s dynamism, making a stroll through Omotesando even more enjoyable.
This building takes on the shape of a large tree. The main frame, functioning as the roots and trunk, spans one basement level and four above-ground floors, employing a hybrid steel-and-reinforced-concrete (RC) structure. The basement’s RC frame, housing a cavernous space, transforms into SRC columns and steel beams on the first and second floors, then into an open steel frame on the third and fourth floors. This evolution mirrors the increasingly expansive views encountered as one ascends at the outer perimeter of the main frame, which represents the tree canopy, terraces lush with plants, and light outdoor staircases connect, creating a continuous circulation path with no dead ends.
Vegetation varies by floor. From ground level to the rooftop, a gradient of green paints the facade as diverse plants coexist—shifting from deep greens dominated by native species to lighter greens incorporating non-native species. Rainwater collected underground, accessed via the terraces and columns, is reused for plant irrigation. Crayon House brick tiles are repurposed for stair and exterior paving surfaces.
Here, rain and materials circulate. Terraces and staircases accessible to all feature benches finished with terrazzo incorporating ammonite and quartz as seed stones on every floor. This becomes a public space where people strolling through the city can occasionally stop by, gaze at interactive art reflecting the sky underground or iron art resembling signposts, and find a moment of solitude within the urban landscape.
Visitors to GREENTERRACE Omotesando are guided from the zelkova tree-lined avenue through the promenade to the ground-level pilotis. Invited by the plants, they explore the aerial garden in three dimensions, ascending to the rooftop. From there, they can see the forest of Meiji Jingu Shrine, created by human hands a century ago and matured over time. We hope that 2024 will mark the beginning of a century-long story where architecture and plants coexist inseparably here.
