勝野木材森のショールーム / 太太

自然を抽象化した、木質キューブで構成されたギャラリー

長野県南木曽町で森林の伐採から製材までを一貫して行う勝野木材。彼らのフィロソフィーである「持続的な森林経営」を、身体全体で感じられるギャラリーを設計した。

我々が地方で活動を始めて気づいたこと。
それは、都市部で語られる「自然への憧れ」「ウェルビーイング」といった幸福な理想に対し、実際の自然はそれだけでは語れないという現実であった。虫や獣、植物が生態系をかけた戦いを繰り広げ、時に人間さえも命を落とす。そんな自然の本質を知り尽くした山の男たち――「山師」を束ねるのが勝野木材である。

このギャラリーは、木曽谷と呼ばれるこの地域の自然の生々しさを抽象化し、山師たちが命懸けで紡いできた木曽檜の歴史と魅力に触れる場所として計画した。敷地は、勝野木材が製材を行う工場の一角。計画にあたり、彼らの主力商材であり日本の木造建築でもっとも一般的な「105mm角」の柱材に着目した。
105mm角という構造的であり工業的であるモディールを、人間の身体感覚に近い「420mm」という寸法に束ねて空間全体のモディールとして全体を分割した。既存の床に上張りしたフレキシブルボードは420mm角でカットし、3mmの目地を採りグリッドを可視化することで、人の居場所と木の居場所を融合した。
具体的にはグリッド上に、谷地（谷のような地形）を形成するように、2種類の木質キューブを配置した。木曽檜の美しい白さと繊細な年輪をもつ「羽目板」のキューブは、人が腰掛ける場や照明器具の居場所となる。対比として開発した「木曽檜の樹皮ボード」のキューブは、展示物を際立たせる台座となる。

本計画では統一されたモデュールの中で素材を使い分け、役割を緩やかに分節しながらも、人を含めた全ての要素を「木材」によって統合することに挑戦した。

A gallery composed of wooden cubes that abstract nature

Katsuno Wood, based in Nagiso-machi, Nagano Prefecture, handles every step of the process from logging to lumber production. We designed a gallery where visitors can experience their philosophy of “sustainable forest management” with their entire bodies.

What we realized when we began working in rural areas:
Unlike the happy ideals of “longing for nature” and “well-being” often discussed in urban centers, nature cannot be defined by those concepts alone. Insects, animals, and plants wage battles for survival within the ecosystem, and sometimes even humans lose their lives. Katsuno Wood brings together these “mountain men”—those who know the true nature of the wilderness inside and out.

This gallery was conceived as a space to abstract the raw vitality of nature in the Kiso Valley region and to engage visitors with the history and allure of Kiso cypress—a legacy woven by the mountain men at the risk of their lives. The site is a corner of the Katsuno Wood mill where timber is processed. In planning the project, we focused on the “105mm square” column timber—their flagship product and the most common size in Japanese wooden architecture.
We took this 105mm-square—a structural and industrial module—and grouped it into 420mm units, a dimension closer to human perception, to divide the entire space using it as the overarching spatial module. Flexible boards laid over the existing floor were cut into 420mm squares; by leaving 3mm joints to visualize the grid, we fused the spaces for people with those for the wood.
Specifically, two types of wooden cubes were arranged on the grid to form “valleys” (topographical features resembling valleys). Cubes made of “paneling” featuring the beautiful whiteness and delicate growth rings of Kiso cypress serve as seating areas and mounting points for lighting fixtures. In contrast, cubes made of “Kiso cypress bark boards”—developed specifically for this project—function as pedestals that highlight the exhibits.

In this project, we sought to integrate all elements—including people—through the use of wood, while differentiating materials within a unified modular system and gently segmenting their roles.
