築60年を超える私立高校の改修の計画。「生徒が校舎中のどこでも過ごしたくなり、教室以外の場所でも好きな場所を選んでさまざまな活動を受け入れる校舎にしたい」という理事長の想いから始まったプロジェクトである。
各時代のニーズに適応して増築・改築されてきた校舎は、入口がいくつもあり動線が複雑になっていたため、まずは動線の整理が課題であると感じた。また、広いピロティや廊下などは校舎の間にある薄暗い場所であったため活用されづらく感じた。生徒が日常的に利用したくなり、友達同士で休み時間も集いたくなる場所が必要であった。
「向陵スクエア」は多数ある入口から最初に通過する中心的な空間として配置することで動線を整理した。ここは生徒や教員が行き交い、思い思いに滞在する「公園のような場所」を目指した。各フロアや棟ごとにに生徒の交流拠点として特色ある居場所を散りばめている。校舎全体で過ごすには空調断熱改修も重要であった。
温熱環境の専門家とともに検証を重ね、建具を新設する位置も含め、費用対効果の高い断熱改修範囲と方法を試みている。
年間を通して季節を問わず生徒がのびのびと過ごせる校舎として魅力的に利用されていって欲しい。

A highschool featuring a central park designed to streamline the complex circulation patterns resulting from repeated expansions
This project involved renovating a private high school that is over 60 years old. It began with the chairman’s vision: “I want to create a school building where students feel comfortable spending time anywhere on campus and can choose their favorite spots outside the classrooms to engage in a variety of activities.”
The school building had been expanded and remodeled over the years to meet the needs of each era, resulting in multiple entrances and a complex circulation pattern. Consequently, we prioritized streamlining the circulation flow. Additionally, the spacious pilotis and hallways—located in dimly lit areas between the school buildings—felt underutilized. There was a need for spaces that students would want to use daily and where they would naturally gather with friends during breaks.
“Koryo Square” was positioned as the central space through which students pass first upon entering any of the many entrances, thereby streamlining the flow of movement. The goal was to create a “park-like space” where students and faculty could come and go and linger as they pleased. We have dotted each floor and building with distinctive gathering spots designed to serve as hubs for student interaction. Air conditioning and insulation upgrades were also essential to ensure the comfort of the entire school building.
Working closely with thermal environment experts, we are conducting extensive testing to determine the most cost-effective scope and methods for insulation upgrades, including the placement of new doors and windows.
We hope the school will be used as an attractive space where students can relax and enjoy themselves throughout the year, regardless of the season.
