本計画の敷地は、工場や老人ホームが点在する雑多な都市の片隅にある、旗竿状に切り分けられた小さな砂利敷きの土地である。スケールや機能が混在する周辺環境の中で、形態的な主張を前面に出すのではなく、この場所で暮らす人の生活に目を向けることから設計を始めた。
美容室を営む夫と、その活動を支える家族の生活リズムや外部との関わり方を丁寧に観察し、家族が同じ気配を共有しながら暮らせる住まいのあり方を探っていった。限られた予算の中で過剰な機能を排し、馬小屋のように潔い一室空間として生活機能を集約した、1つの箱を計画している。
構造は、間口5,904mm、ピッチ606mmの木造架構を基本とし、一部にスチールを組み合わせた。空間の中央には浴室・脱衣所・クロークといった必須機能をまとめたボックスを配置し、その周囲にリビング、ダイニングキッチン、洗面、子供室といった領域が架構の下で緩やかに連続する構成としている。大屋根のもとに広がる余白は用途を固定せず、住まい手の解釈によってかたちを変えていく曖昧な居場所となっている。
また本住宅では、鉄工所で家具や建築金物の制作に携わってきた古賀将太との協働により、手摺りや照明、机の脚にいたるまで、住宅に点在する金物や細部を、建築と一体的に検討した。鉄の強さだけに頼るのではなく、木や煉瓦、ビニール、紐といった鉄以外の素材についても打合せを重ね、加工のしやすさや手触り、使われ方を確認しながら、細部のかたちを決めていった。
その結果、手摺りをはじめとする細部は、単なる機能的な装置としての役割を超え、空間の印象や人との距離感に静かに作用する存在となった。特定の名称や用途に限定される装置としてではなく、空間の濃淡を調整する、形容詞的な存在へと転化している。
壁と線で構成された空間に、物質の曖昧な影が差し込み、奥行きが生まれている。

The site for this project is a small, flagpole-shaped plot of gravel-covered land tucked away in a corner of a diverse urban area dotted with factories and nursing homes. Amid a surrounding environment characterized by a mix of scales and functions, we began the design process not by emphasizing a bold formal statement, but by focusing on the daily lives of the people who live here.
We carefully observed the daily rhythms and interactions with the outside world of the husband, who runs a hair salon, and the family that supports his work, and explored what kind of home would allow the family to live together while sharing a sense of presence. Working within a limited budget, we eliminated excessive functions and designed a single “box” that consolidates all living functions into a single, uncluttered space, much like a stable.
The structure is based on a timber frame with a frontage of 5,904 mm and a bay spacing of 606 mm, partially combined with steel. A box containing essential functions—such as the bathroom, changing room, and closet—is positioned at the center of the space, with areas like the living room, dining-kitchen, washroom, and children’s room arranged in a composition that flows gently around it beneath the framework. The open space beneath the large roof is not designated for any specific use; it serves as an ambiguous living area that takes on different forms depending on the residents’ interpretations.
Furthermore, in collaboration with Shota Koga—who has been involved in the production of furniture and architectural hardware at a metalworks shop—we considered the hardware and details scattered throughout the house, from handrails and lighting to desk legs, as an integral part of the architecture. Rather than relying solely on steel strength, we held repeated discussions about non-steel materials such as wood, brick, vinyl, and cord, determining the form of each detail and confirming their workability, texture, and intended use.
As a result, details such as the handrails transcend their role as mere functional devices and have become elements that quietly influence the impression of the space and the sense of distance between people. Rather than being devices limited to specific names or uses, they have transformed into adjectival elements that modulate the nuances of the space.
Ambiguous shadows cast by these materials penetrate the space—composed of walls and lines—creating a sense of depth.
