八ヶ岳の麓に位置し、周囲を美しいカラマツ林に囲まれた敷地に建つ、2階建ての小さな住宅である。
自然豊かな地域での暮らしにおいて、車の存在は不可欠であり、雨天時に濡れずに乗降できるガレージの機能が求められた。敷地面積には余裕がある一方で、要望された床面積は小さく、敷地周辺が日本屈指の晴天率を誇るエリアであることから、限られた面積を駐車のみに使うことは非合理的と感じられた。
そこで、建物全体に大きな屋根をかけ、建築の南側半分を、ガレージから土間テラス、薪ストーブのある土間リビングまで一直線に連続させる計画とした。日常的には屋根の下に余裕をもって駐車できるスペースがあり、天候に左右されず荷物の出し入れをスムーズに行うことが可能である。一方で、晴れた日や人を招く際には、土間リビングの建具を開け放ち、室内外を横断した活動を可能にする可変性の高い軒下空間となる。
室内は、土間リビングやテラスと一体的に使用できるゆったりとしたダイニングスペース、吹き抜けと繋がる子供室、切妻屋根の形がそのまま表れるシンメトリーの寝室、東面に突き出して樹々を眺めながら仕事ができる小さなワークスペースなど、大屋根の下を使い切った個性的な部屋が連続する。
自然素材を活かしながら明るく上品な印象を与え、窓の外の緑が映える計画となるよう、素材は漆喰と杉板のみを使用して、1つひとつの面の切り替えを慎重に検討している。
敷地の周囲には全方位に高さのあるカラマツの林が広がり、まっすぐに伸びる幹に囲まれている。軒を支える柱にはカラマツ材を用いて整然と並べ、外装はカラマツ材を縦張りで用いることで、周囲の垂直性と呼応しながら、自然に馴染むような佇まいを実現した。
対称性があり、幾何学的な構成のプランと立面が、建築に秩序をもたらす。一方で、柱の面取りや土間テラスの端部の円形のつくり、手刻みの大工の菅原さんの丁寧かつ個性ある仕事が、細部にやわらかな印象を与え、全体のバランスをとっている。
敷地の魅力を存分に生かし、内外を一体的に使える懐の広い住宅を目指した。

This is a small two-story house situated at the foot of Mount Yatsugatake, on a lot surrounded by beautiful larch forests.
In a region rich in nature, a car is indispensable for daily life, so a garage that allows residents to get in and out without getting wet in the rain was required. While the lot offered ample space, the requested floor area was small. Given that the surrounding area boasts one of the highest rates of sunny days in Japan, it seemed unreasonable to dedicate the limited space solely to parking.
Therefore, a large roof was designed to cover the entire building, and the southern half of the structure was planned as a continuous, straight line extending from the garage through the earthen-floored terrace to the earthen-floored living room with a wood-burning stove. Daily, there is ample parking under the roof, allowing for smooth luggage loading and unloading regardless of the weather. On the other hand, on sunny days or when entertaining guests, the doors to the earthen-floored living room can be thrown open, transforming the space under the eaves into a highly versatile area that facilitates activities spanning both indoors and outdoors.
Inside, a series of distinctive rooms makes full use of the space beneath the large roof: a spacious dining area that integrates seamlessly with the earthen-floored living room and terrace; a children’s room connected to the double-height space; a symmetrical bedroom that reflects the shape of the gable roof; and a small workspace protruding toward the east where one can work while gazing at the trees.
To create a bright and elegant impression while making the most of natural materials and to ensure the design highlights the greenery outside the windows, only plaster and cedar planks were used, with careful consideration given to the transitions between surfaces.
The site is surrounded by a tall larch forest, with the house nestled among the straight, towering trunks. Larch columns are arranged in an orderly fashion to support the eaves, and the exterior features vertical larch cladding, creating a presence that harmonizes with the surrounding verticality while blending naturally into the landscape.
The symmetrical, geometrically composed floor plan and elevations bring order to the architecture. At the same time, the chamfered edges of the posts, the circular edges of the earthen-floored terrace, and the meticulous, distinctive craftsmanship of Mr. Sugawara—a master carpenter who hand-carves his work—soften the details, balancing the overall design.
The goal was to create a spacious home that fully capitalizes on the site’s charm and seamlessly integrates interior and exterior spaces.
