We renovated a unit in a concrete apartment building in Nishi-Shinjuku into our office and a shared workspace.
For this project, we decided to expose the existing concrete structure in the interior design to maximize the usable floor area of the office space. However, since the facility was designed to operate unstaffed 24 hours a day, we also needed to implement insulation measures to ensure a stable indoor environment and preserve the concrete structure.
We therefore focused on the air layers found in air mattresses, which are commonly used as disaster preparedness supplies. By adapting translucent air mattresses as thermal curtains to encircle the entire room, we devised a design that achieves both a bright, airy interior space bathed in sunlight and high thermal insulation. As a result, the overlapping hollow shapes characteristic of air mattresses reflect and diffuse light, brightening the interior while casting shifting shadows on the floor—reminiscent of sunlight filtering through trees—thereby creating a sense of the changing light and the passage of time. Furthermore, by incorporating insulation into the curtains, the design allows them to be fully opened during transitional seasons, enabling residents to enjoy seasonal changes in the space better.
The renovated apartment building was constructed in the 1980s, and its interior concrete structure was extremely rough, with various marks left behind, giving it a cluttered appearance. Rather than concealing these elements with white paint or similar finishes, the designers deliberately applied a high-gloss clear coat. This approach uses the play of light and reflection to mask the clutter, lending cohesion to the entire space while visually emphasizing the passage of time through light.
In this project, we made extensive use of MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)—a highly recyclable wood-based material whose characteristics and texture closely resemble those of cement board—to achieve harmony with the space enclosed by the concrete structure. The restrooms, back office, and kitchen were compactly integrated into the interior, with walls finished in colored MDF, maximizing usable space for occupants. The office space features low-profile furniture and tables crafted from colored MDF, aiming to create a sense of openness and airiness despite its small size.
