This project aims to create a home where three family members—each with different daily rhythms and activities—can gather freely while respecting one another.

In developing the plan, the following four points served as design guidelines:
① A spatial composition featuring “folds” that allows residents to sense each other’s presence while maintaining an appropriate sense of distance
② An open-plan layout that mitigates environmental differences between the north and south while creating a sense of spaciousness
③ A flexible layout with divisible and interchangeable elements that can adapt to changes in life stages
④ Retaining the existing layout of wet areas to minimize renovation costs

To integrate these conditions, the entire space was organized into six grids without a hierarchical relationship. Each grid was configured based on dimensions derived from anticipated daily activities, grouping existing elements such as windows and the front door.

The partition walls dividing the cells are set back 900 mm from each grid intersection, ensuring that the “intersections” remain imperceptible. This creates a state where semi-private cells are loosely connected. It is an “expandable space” that seamlessly transitions—from a secluded area to one where the overall expansiveness is felt—as the body moves through it. In particular, diagonal sightlines invite awareness of the space’s depth and create a psychological sense of expansiveness that encourages movement.

Furthermore, rather than centralizing storage, it was distributed according to each space’s character and the activities taking place there. Objects distributed in a network-like pattern further blur the grid’s boundaries, gently reconnecting the spaces. Residents “wander”* through the spaces between the end walls and objects as they move from one spot to another, enjoying a pleasant interplay of visibility and concealment, along with a series of small discoveries. As a result, the limited 60 square meters has been transformed into a dynamic, open living space that is used to a high degree.
