A deformed courthouse that accepts slopes and connects gently
The site is located in a residential area developed on a small hill in Akashi City and is characterized by its shape as if it were hugging the slope of the road. The client requested that the house be closed so that it would not be visible from the surrounding area. We considered how to bring the outside in and how to open it up and sought a way to embrace the site so that each act of living could be enjoyed while drawing out the site’s possibilities.
First, we thought of a “floor surface that follows the topography,” something between land and architecture. We arranged the floor in the shape of a deformed courthouse with differences in elevation. A continuous, expansive area and three gardens (courtyard, front garden, and back garden) were created. In order to regulate the relationship between the areas and the outside, three ring-shaped white walls (one in the shape of a U) were used to unify the whole. The central 1,200mm-high white wall changes its opening height as a hanging wall on the first floor, a waist wall on the second floor, and a ring that closes in the air in the backyard, connecting the interior and exterior while changing its quality. The garden (site) and the garden itself create a variety of relationships between places, with new things appearing and disappearing as one moves up and down or as one stands, sits, or lays down.
One of the unique features of the site was the slope with masonry piles at the back of the house when it was developed as a housing site. The stone garden created to continue from the courtyard to the front yard was conceived as a way to connect the area with the slope. I hoped that it would be an opportunity to gradually change the landscape of the city as if to reclaim the topography. Although the facade of the building itself is windowless, we aimed for a building with deep nostalgia through the open front yard, the open courtyard that peeks out from under the leaping part, and the approach that goes through it. By using the distance between the courtyard and the approach, privacy is secured so that it appears and disappears. A way of opening up to the town is considered possible without overdoing it.
While responding to the individual client’s way of living and the site’s unique environment, we hope to create a house with universality, including the enjoyment and physicality of living, and a way of renewing the town inherited from the past. (Kanako Momma, Shinya Furukawa)
