敷地は大店立地法に基づいて計画された大規模商業エリアの一角に位置し、周囲には大型の店舗が建ち並ぶ。いわゆるロードサイド店舗という括りにはなるが、通過交通が多い幹線道路沿いではないため、比較的ゆっくりとした車の動きや広大な青空駐車場からの徒歩客の絵が想像できる場所である。
周囲の店舗は平屋ながらも7、8m級の高さの建物が想定されるなかで、近接する建物に埋没せず、かつ上述のような車・人のスピードに寄り添うような形態として、片流れ屋根をベースにしたデザインとした。
片流れの妻面をファサードとし、ヒューマンなスケールに近づく水下側を店内への入口に、水上側に出てくる建物内外を貫通する大きな壁面は光や季節の移ろいを感じられるような面とした。ネットショップでもショッピングセンター内でもなく、ロードサイド店である存在意義の1つには、外部の環境を反映できる器であることと考えている。
ファサードは北面になるため、日中は店前に大きな影を落とすが、大きく跳ね出した屋根の一部に開口を設けて影の中に光が差し込むようにした。正午以降は木陰が水上側の壁面に映り込む。
店内奥のバックヤード部分で片流れから切妻の屋根形状に切り替えることで、片流れとの隙間から南面の明るい光を取り入れた。開口部の形状が三角形ということと袖壁とケラバの出を調整して、手元の商品には直射日光は当たらないようにしている。
内部まで連続する大屋根と垂木、厚みをもった独立した壁とボリュームによる外周面の構成、鉄骨やサッシとの取り合いの調整によってガラスの存在感を低減させ、店内で過ごしていても外の環境を感じやすいような開放的な空間を目指した。（平居 直）
An optician's store with a generous single-slope roof welcomes visitors
The site is located in the corner of a large-scale commercial area planned in accordance with the Large-scale Store Location Law and is surrounded by a row of large stores. Although the site is categorized as a so-called “roadside store,” it is not located along an arterial road with much passing traffic. One can imagine a picture of relatively slow car movements and customers walking from the vast open air.
While the surrounding stores are expected to be single-story buildings of 7 or 8 meters in height, the design was based on a single-sloping roof to avoid being buried in the neighboring buildings and to accompany the speed of cars and people as described above.
The lower part of the roof slope, which approaches a human scale, is used as the entrance to the store. At the same time, the large wall that penetrates the interior and exterior of the building on the higher side is a surface that allows visitors to feel the light and seasonal transitions. One of the reasons for the store’s existence as a roadside store, as opposed to an online store or a store in a shopping center, is that it is a vessel that can reflect the external environment.
Since the facade is north-facing, it casts a large shadow in front of the store during the daytime, but an opening was made in a part of the large protruding roof to allow light to shine through the shadow. After noon, the shade of the trees is reflected on the wall on the high side of the top.
By switching from a single-sloped to a gabled roof shape in the backyard section at the rear of the store, bright light from the south side is brought in through the gap between the single-sloped roof and the gabled roof. The triangular shape of the opening and the protrusion of the sleeve wall and the Keraba were adjusted so that the merchandise was not exposed to direct sunlight.
The large roof and rafters that continue into the interior, the composition of the exterior surface with thick, independent walls and volumes, and the adjustment of the steel frame and sashes reduce the presence of glass, creating an open space that makes it easy to feel the outside environment even when spending time inside the store.
