京都の生活には、地域の人々が子供の面倒をみるという習慣があったとされている。そこには、「道」という場所の余白が公共の場所として存在していたと考えられる。
近年、多くのビルディングタイプが機能性や合理性により均質な空間を追求された結果、場所の固有性や特別感というものが消え、町の日常から乖離された場所となってるのではないか。改めて、生活の延長、道の延長について考え、広場と道が交錯するホールがこの場所のコミュニティを形成し、多くの人に利用してもらえる場所になることを想定して計画した。
また、敷地周辺は駅前という好立地にも関わらず、地域住民が集う施設がなかったため、京都における「ホテル」という場所が、現代の価値とその歴史を交えた上でのプログラムをつくるべく、ホテルの機能に加え、地域振興に貢献する機能も盛り込んでいる。
5階建ての建物は、低層部が地域住民も利用できるRC造のホール、その上に木造の宿泊フロア、屋上ホールの3つから成る。古典建築の要素である「基壇」「柱」「屋根」を、それぞれ「ホール」「木造ボリューム」「屋上テラス」として現代的に置き換えている。
1・2階は2層分の吹き抜けとし、ホテルの前の長岡天神駅のホームに向けてほぼ全面を開放した。駅のホームも客席の一部と捉え、町を取り込む大きな「ホール」として計画している。
ファサードはグリッド形状としての基壇や木造ボリュームを連続させ、ばらばらなボリュームが一体感をもってシンボリックに見えるようにデザインした。洗練されたホワイトボックスのような場所ではなく、場所性が強い「京都のホテル」として、新しくも文化的な佇まいを具現化した。
木造構造部分には、地元・京都産のスギ材を使用している。市街地に建つ5階建ての都市型ホテルでは日本初の試みとして、竣工時には話題を集めた。
クライアントは地場の工務店で、本プロジェクトと同様に、過去にも木造4階建ての企業本社ビルや商業ビルなどの大型木造建築を手がけた実績をもつ。
これまで大手ゼネコンの領域であった大型建築の分野に地域工務店が参入することで、持続可能な地域活性化につながる事例を示してきた。今回のホテルも、そうした地産木造ビル推進事業の集大成として建設され、持続性という観点からも意義のあるプロジェクトとなった。（OHArchitecture＋スタジオモブ）
A hotel opened to the community using local wood in cooperation with a local construction company
It is said that Kyoto’s life was marked by the practice of local people taking care of their children. There, the margins of the place called “roads” are thought to have existed as public places.
In recent years, as a result of the pursuit of homogenous space through the functionality and rationality of many building types, the specificity and specialness of a place have disappeared. It has become a place disconnected from the everyday life of the town. The project was designed with the expectation that the hall, where the plaza and the street intersect, would form a community of this place and be used by many people.
Despite its location in front of the station, there were no facilities for residents to gather around the site, so the hotel was designed to contribute to the development of the area, in addition to its function as a hotel, to create a program based on its contemporary value and history.
The building is five stories high and consists of three sections: an RC construction hall on the lower level for use by residents, a wooden lodging floor above it, and a rooftop hall. The elements of classical architecture – the platform, the columns, and the roof – have been replaced in a modern way by the hall, the wooden volume, and the rooftop terrace, respectively.
A two-story atrium is located on the first and second floors, and almost all of it is open to the Nagaoka-Tenjin station platform. The platform is considered part of the seating area and is planned as a big “hall” that incorporates the town.
The façade is designed with a grid of continuous wooden platforms and wooden volumes, and the different volumes are designed to appear unified and symbolic. Rather than a sophisticated white box, we embodied a new, yet cultured atmosphere as a “hotel in Kyoto” with a strong sense of place.
The structure part of the wood is made of locally sourced Kyoto cedar. It was the first attempt in Japan to build a five-story urban hotel in an urban area and attracted much attention when it was completed. The client and contractor is a local building contractor. As this project, they have been worked on large wooden buildings in the past, including a four-story wooden corporate headquarters and a commercial building.
The projects have shown how local construction companies’ participation in the field of large-scale structures, which had previously been the domain of major general contractors, can lead to the revitalization of local communities sustainably. This hotel was constructed as the culmination of this project to promote locally produced wooden buildings and is a significant project from the perspective of sustainability.
