場所は沖縄県の那覇市。近隣には伝統工芸である壺屋焼などの焼き物通りがあり、本敷地はそうした落ち着きがあるものの沖縄でも珍しい密集した住宅地である。
敷地には2階建ての実家があった。古くて使い勝手が悪く、リノベーションするにしても駆体コンディションが悪い。そうした流れで建て直ししようとしたとき、クライアントからは自然と「使い勝手がよい平屋」という要望が出た。しかし人通りが多く密集していることから、プライバシー確保の要望が大きかった。
設計する立場としては「古い歴史をもつ地域柄から外観デザインをどうするか？」という課題が投げかけられたような気がした。とはいえプランを始めると隣地の土地との計画地レベル差が大きく、建物をセットバックさせなければならず、平屋の面積を確保するのが難しい。使える面積を最大限にするため、道路に面する境界線や隣地境界線を平行移動し、室内面積が最大限残るように外壁ラインを決めた。
そうして計画した外観は、敷地形状と似た多角形（ポリゴン）の家となった。歴史のある場所で、この多角形の外観は正面があるようなないような、不思議な距離感と調和を近隣ともつ家となっている。
外壁面はできるだけ開口部を設けず、室内LDKの位置を決めた。LDKに連続するようにテラスを設けるが、外壁はそのままテラスを覆うかたちとなっている。こうして囲まれたテラスはLDKに安心感を与えつつ、沖縄的な縁側のような半戸外の場所となり光と風を取り入れる。平屋なので、必要な光と風はテラスやトップライトなど空から取り入れた。訪れる人からは、室内の明るさは驚きを与えるようだった。
こうして出来上がった住宅がクライアントの生活を支え、そして近隣にも馴染み、長く建ち続けてくれることを願う。（比嘉 幹）
Polygonal one-story house that corresponds to the site shape and height difference
The site is located in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. The site is located in a densely populated residential area, which is rare in Okinawa, although it has a calm atmosphere.
There was a two-story house on the site. It was old and useless, and the condition of the building was not good enough for renovation. When we decided to rebuild it, the client naturally requested a one-story house that would be easy to use. However, there was a great demand for privacy due to the densely populated area.
As a designer, I felt as if I was being asked the question, “How do we design the exterior of the building given the old history of the area? However, as soon as we started the plan, we found a large difference in the level of the adjacent land, and the building had to be set back, so we could not use the entire site. It soon became clear that the usable area was not large enough, and it was difficult to secure a flat roof area. Therefore, the boundary lines facing the road and the neighboring land were shifted in parallel to maximize the usable area. The exterior wall lines were determined so that the interior area would remain maximized.
The result is a polygon-shaped house that resembles the shape of the site. The polygonal exterior of the house has a strange sense of distance and harmony with the neighborhood as if there is no front.
The house’s exterior walls have no openings, and the LDK is located in the same way as the LDK, with the exterior walls covering the terrace. This enclosed terrace gives a sense of security to the LDK, and at the same time, it becomes a semi-outdoor place like an Okinawan veranda, bringing in light and wind. Since this is a one-story house, the necessary light and air are taken from the sky through the terrace and top lights. The brightness of the interior surprised the visitors.
We hope that the house will support the client’s life, fit in with the neighborhood, and continue to be built for a long time. (Motoki Higa)
