(English below)

Renovation of RC housing that pays homage to the design of existing housing and makes the best use of it

Renovation of a walled RC house facing Senri Ryokuchi, which has grown up beautifully after 50 years. In renovation, it is essential to maximize the potential of the existing building. The existing house had wonderful openings facing the green area. We gave each room its proportions and details to make the opening more intimate with the green space. The steel-framed pitched roof created a lot of air volume. We considered this ample air volume not as a “room” but as an “environment.” The space was designed to provide good heat, natural light, and ventilation and to allow each family member to choose their favorite place to live from among the “environment,” which is a proposal for the family’s unique way of living as they love camping.
The beautiful blue tiles on the existing exterior walls and the blue stained-glass windows created a unique atmosphere in the entryway and gave the house its character. Therefore, we decided to use mortar for all the floors, walls, and ceilings in the entryway and corridor and limited materials so that the entire space would be bathed in the blue light of the stained glass. The entrance to each room is a deep, low-ceilinged plywood tunnel. This tunnel emphasizes the contrast between the blue space of the existing house and the bright space intimate with greenery and contributes to enhancing the potential of each other.

Many beautiful things have stood the test of time. This house has been successfully revived by designing a setting that honors and respects them and maximizes them. (Yoshiaki Nagasaka)
