(English below)

A project to selectively relocate a historic Western-style building

This is an office with a house facing the approach to Hakozaki Shrine in Fukuoka. Clients were given the parts of the Western-style building “Kyushu University Matsuhama Welfare Facility” (completed in 1928), which was about to be demolished at the former site of Kyushu University Hakozaki Campus. The client, who has long been involved in the preservation and utilization of historic buildings on the former campus site, was concerned that the demolition would cause people to lose their memories of Kyushu University in Hakozaki.
Rather than carrying out strict repairs based on traces, as in the case of so-called cultural property preservation, the project is a “spolia” type of memory inheritance that links historical values to new architecture through the selective use of historical elements (spolia is the act of reusing elements such as sculptures and columns in Western architecture by converting them to other buildings). The juxtaposition and layering of time differences, such as the placement of an old fixture frame next to new building material, acquire a multilayered meaning. It is an attempt to pass on memories through objects.
In order to reconstruct the components on the new site, which is 800 meters away from the original site, I thought it was necessary to inherit three important memories while harmonizing with the surrounding environment and adapting to the site conditions, such as the sub-fire prevention area. The symbolic façade, which has become a part of the city landscape, inherits “URBAN MEMORY,” the stairwell, which has a large volume and conveys a sense of grandeur, inherits “SPATIAL MEMORY,” and the building’s “MATERIAL MEMORY,” such as its characteristic façade color and strong fitting frame. The new façade is a symmetrical and contrasting composition of masses and voids, with a steel frame skeleton as “false” that reinterprets the volume of the historical building as “real.” The steel frame, reminiscent of the existing form, ensures a three-dimensional landscape with greenery and expandability to meet the changing environment of the residents.
The tent-membrane roof fills the interior with a soft quality of light and gently diffuses the light to the outside like a lantern, becoming a new symbol of the city. During the festival season, the white tents lining the approach to Hakozaki Shrine in front of the building will create a sense of unity with the approximately 500 stalls, and the building will become a place where the people of the town gather to create a new culture, centered on the client who is also involved in community development.
