〈BAR Kingdom〉は京都の中心地四条河原町から歩いて7分ほどにある京町家を改修した、ゆっくり洋酒が飲める場所のプロジェクトとしてデザインしたオーセンティックなBARである。クライアントは、有名店で長年修行されてきた筋金入りのバーテンダーで、初めての対面では非常にストイックな、朗らかではあるけれどまるで寡黙な職人のような印象を受けた。
要望は明確には示されなかったが、店のデザインについてのヒントを探し、いろいろなお店を共に巡った。幾度となく接する中で感じたオーナーバーテンダーであるクライアントの、人への丁寧な態度や、さりげない気遣い、人をもてなす安心できる場所への思想に触れるうちに、目指す空間は、静かで、目を凝らすと味わいが出てくるようなゆったりした落ち着ける空間となっていった。
数件目の候補物件となる今回の看板京町家を訪れ、座敷と対面する中庭の空間を見た時に、醸成してきた目指している場所をつくれると思い、この物件に決めていただいた。もともとは呉服関係の会社の社屋として使われており、元のオーナーが内装を数寄屋風の和室に設え大事に使われていた。
道側は看板町家に改築されており、タイル仕上げの四角い小さなビルのような風貌であったが、中は真壁造りに聚楽で仕上げられた土壁、竿縁天井、畳、ふすま、床の間、下地窓、庭といったエレメントにより、すでに静かでゆったりとした中に凛とした緊張も感じられる良い雰囲気があった。そのため、この雰囲気を活かしながら、どのように静かに洋酒を振る舞う場所へと変えていくかを考えデザインを進めた。
空間構成は、クライアントと共にインスピレーションを得たとおり、建物の最深部である庭と対面する二間続きの座敷を1室として、バーカウンターを設置した。既存の天井では椅子式の空間には低いので天井を取り、小屋組み、トントン葺きの野地板を現すことで3m以上の天井高があるゆったりとした空間としている。庭への建具はすべてはめ殺し窓とし、内部と庭が視覚的に一体となっている。内壁や柱梁、床の間、下地窓などは、照度を落とした店内に合わせ、暗めの古色に塗り直したが、基本的にそのまま利用している。
入り口から客席前のホールまでには長めの玄関動線をつくり、京都の中心地の喧騒から静かな店内へと徐々に変わっていく導入部とした。この部分には、クライアント自らが骨董市を歩いて見つけた仏具の燭台や、信楽の作家につくらせたオリジナルの貍など独特の趣向が控えめに凝らされている。
また、カウンター席はより豊かに、ゆったりと広がりを持たせ、さまざまな過ごし方を選べるテーブル席、ボックス席の客室2・3を計画した。広がりと同時に少し囲まれた空間もつくれるよう、柔らかに間仕切ることができる太鼓障子を設置している。
客席3では、クライアントによりアンティークシャンデリアや、酒神バッカスの絵画を設え、和風空間との不思議な調和を創出し、非日常を感じさせるような空間づくりを意図している。
店の顔となるファサードは銅板葺きとしている。葺きたての銅板は赤く光を反射し見るものの目に刺激が強い仕上げであるが、徐々に表面が酸化して、落ち着いた表情へと変化していく。数年経つ頃には、この地域の定番の洋酒が飲める場所として、昔からあったように、街中の景色に馴染んで行くことを期待している。（髙橋 勝）
A bar space that takes advantage of the Sukiya-style setting
“BAR Kingdom” is an authentic bar designed as a project for a place where you can relax and drink Western-style alcohol in a renovated “Kyo-machiya” house, a seven-minute walk from Shijo-Kawaramachi in the heart of Kyoto. The client is a hardcore bartender who has trained for many years in famous restaurants, and at our first meeting, he gave the impression of a very stoic, cheerful, but taciturn craftsman.
Although he did not clearly state his requirements, we visited a number of shops together, looking for hints on the ber’s design. As we came into contact with the client, the owner-bartender, and his courteous attitude towards people, his casual care, and his philosophy of creating a safe place to entertain people, the space we were aiming for became a quiet, relaxing, and soothing place where you can taste the flavors if you look closely.
When they visited the signboard Kyomachiya, which was the first of several candidate properties, and saw the space of the courtyard facing the tatami room, they decided on this property because they thought they could create the kind of place they had been fostering and aiming for. Originally used as a company building for a kimono company, the original owner had carefully used the interior in a sukiya-style Japanese-style room.
The roadside had been converted into a signboard townhouse. Although it had the appearance of a small square building with a tiled finish, the inside already had a good atmosphere with elements such as clay walls finished with juraku in a shinkabe style, a saobuchi ceiling, tatami, fusuma, tokonoma, ground window, and garden, giving a sense of dignity and tension in a quiet and relaxed atmosphere. There were. Therefore, the design process considered how to utilize this atmosphere while transforming it into a quiet place to serve Western-style drinks.
As inspired by the client, the spatial composition consists of a bar counter in one two-room sitting room facing the garden, the deepest part of the building. The existing ceiling is too low for a chair-style space, so we took down the ceiling to reveal the shed framing and the tontong-roofed baseboards, creating a spacious space with a ceiling height of over 3m. All fittings to the garden are inset windows, visually integrating the interior with the garden. The interior walls, columns, beams, tokonoma, and basement windows have been repainted a darker, old-fashioned color to match the dimmed lighting in the restaurant but are basically used as they are.
A long entrance flow was created from the entrance to the hall in front of the seating area, introducing the gradual change from the hustle and bustle of central Kyoto to the quietness of the restaurant’s interior. In this part of the restaurant, unique touches are discreetly elaborated, such as a Buddhist candlestick that the client himself found at an antique market and an original craftsman’s craftsmanship, which he had made by a Shigaraki artist.
In addition, the counter seating has been made richer and more spacious, and a table and box seating rooms 2 and 3 have been planned to offer a variety of ways to spend time. To create a spacious and slightly enclosed space, taiko shoji screens have been installed to create a soft partition between the rooms.
In Seat 3, the client has installed an antique chandelier and a painting of Bacchus, the god of wine, to create a strange harmony with the Japanese-style space, with the intention of creating a space that evokes a sense of the extraordinary.
The façade, which serves as the face of the restaurant, is covered with copper shingles. The freshly thatched copper shingles reflect red light and are very stimulating to the eye, but the surface gradually oxidizes and changes to a more subdued look. It is hoped that in a few years’ time, it will blend in with the townscape as a regular place to drink Western-style wine in the area, just as it has done for a long time. (Masaru Takahashi)
