埼玉郊外、私鉄沿線の閑静な住宅地に建つ、夫婦と子供2人のための専用住宅である。2台の駐車スペース、家族の気配を感じるワンルーム的な明るい空間のほか、屋上スペースの確保が条件として提示された。
決して広くはない敷地条件のなか、外部空間である屋上を積極的に生活空間に取り込むことを試みた。そこでキッチンにテラスを積み重ね、天井の高いリビング・ダイニングと一体化させた構成の3階とした。この最上階となるリビングからは、屋上へと伸びる階段と空や西へ開放されたテラス空間を連続させることで、小住宅でありながら内外部にわたる、のびのびとした拡がりと奥行きのある空間を実現させている。
2階は寝室階とし、下階の玄関から階段が貫く。この階段に接した洗面・トイレをコアとして中央に配し、回遊できる動線とすることで、ここでも行き止まり感のない拡がりをつくり出している。
リビングが最上階に位置することから、1、2階の階高を極力抑えて、各階を少ない段数で繋ぎつつ、道路斜線の制限内で3階のボリュームをできるだけ確保するため、天井高を1階で2,100㎜、2階で2,250㎜、3階では3,750㎜と、慎重に設定した。前面道路側が南面するこの計画では、光と風を自然に取り込むべく、南北に設けた単純な水平連続窓による構成を採用し、2階の寝室階では開口サイズを適度に絞っている。
一方3階では、ベンチ程度の高さの腰壁をもつ天井の半分の高さの南面開口と、北面の屋上テラス空間に向けた全開口とすることで、外に対してわずかに閉じながら、テラスに対して開かれた立体的な中庭型の空間構成とした。こうして、階を上がるにつれ、より拡がりのある光に溢れた生活の場が生まれることになっている。
居室の面積を有効に確保するため、中央に階段を配置し、廊下のない平面計画としている。この階段が閉じた室にならないように、寝室とは半透明な建具で仕切ることとした。建具を開放すれば、蹴込み板のない軽やかな鉄骨階段を介して室相互を見通すことができる。またあえて大きな階段幅を採用することで、上下階を斜めに繋ぐ視線もつくり出した。この視線の交錯する縦空間こそが、テラスからの柔らかい光を下階へ落とすとともに、家族の気配を伝える装置として、また風の道としても機能することを目論んだ。（吉田 豊）
A house that has expanded by manipulating the vertical space
This house is located in a quiet residential area along a private railway line in the suburbs of Saitama and is exclusively for a couple and their two children. Two parking spaces, a bright one-room space where the family can feel the presence of others, and a rooftop space were proposed as conditions.
The site is not large, but we tried to incorporate the rooftop as an external space into the living space. The terrace is built on top of the kitchen and is integrated with the high-ceilinged living and dining rooms on the third floor. From the living room on the top floor, a staircase leads to the rooftop, and the terrace space is open to the sky and the west, creating a spacious and deep space inside and out despite the small size of the house.
The second floor is the bedroom floor, with a staircase running from the entrance on the lower floor. The washroom and toilet are located in the center of the house, adjacent to the stairs, and the flow line is circular, creating a sense of spaciousness without a sense of dead end.
Since the living room is located on the top floor, the ceiling height was carefully set at 2,100mm for the first floor, 2,250mm for the second floor, and 3,750mm for the third floor in order to minimize the height of the first and second floors and connect each floor with a small number of steps while keeping the volume of the third floor within the limit of the diagonal line of the road. The plan faces south on the front roadside, employs a configuration of simple horizontal windows on the north-south axis to let in light and wind naturally, and openings on the second bedroom floor are moderately narrowed.
The third floor, on the other hand, has an opening on the south side that is half the height of the ceiling with a waist wall about the height of a bench. A full opening to the rooftop terrace on the north side creates a three-dimensional courtyard-like spatial composition that is slightly closed to the outside but open to the terrace. Thus, as one moves up the floors, more expansive and light-filled living space is created.
In order to effectively secure the area of the living room, a staircase is placed in the center of the room, and the floor plan has no corridor. To prevent the stairs from becoming a closed room, it is separated from the bedroom by translucent fittings. When the fittings are opened, the light steel staircase without a kickboard can be seen from both rooms. The large width of the stairs also creates a diagonal line of sight between the upper and lower floors. This vertical space where lines of sight intersect is intended to allow soft light from the terrace to fall on the lower floor and function as a device for communicating the presence of family members and as a path for the wind.
