(English below)

Urban wooden house that opens to the inside and is enveloped in light

The site’s first impression where we were asked to build a house was “a very ordinary residential area. The client wanted a home for a family of three, a cat, and a guest room. The street is tangential to the north, and there are houses in all directions except for the monthly garage on the east side. There was no guarantee that the garage on the east side would not be built in the future. In building a house on such a site, we focused on three items to ensure the comfort of the house.

The first was the lightwell.
The garage, guest room, and children’s room are on the first floor, the family room and master bedroom are on the second floor, and the washroom and bathroom are on the third floor. All rooms are connected to the “light well” to welcome light and wind, and We installed only small windows for ventilation on the exterior walls to ensure privacy.

The other is a top light.
In order to make the LDK on the second floor more open space, a portion of the ceiling was made vaulted to allow natural light to pour in through the “top light” (a structural element that partially bears horizontal forces is required in the structural design of wood construction).

The final element is a curved solid ceiling.
The “curved solid surface ceiling” was planned as a device to lead soft light from the top light into the LDK, nestled against the floor, which is the structural element that bears the horizontal force. By straightforwardly reading the necessary functions, a cross-sectional curve was determined, and by giving depth to that curve, it becomes a curved surface. A sense of floating was given by separating each 150mm from the white walls on both sides that clash with each other. The solid ceiling changes the ceiling of a house, which tends to be monotonous, and emphasizes the impression of the entire space.

The aim was to create a new urban wooden house in a “very ordinary residential area,” surrounded by light and natural materials that would bring the family closer together. (Takeshi Hamada)
