日本的手法で景色を取り込む東屋のカフェ

京都嵐山、国の史跡、名勝にも指定されている、南北に流れる桂川に架かる渡月橋と竹林があまりにも有名なエリア。
観光客のにぎわいを見せる通りからほんの少し離れた、料亭が集まる桂川沿いの一角にひっそりとたたずむ平屋東屋を「%ARABICA」2号店としてリノベーションするプロジェクトである。
1号店の東山と同様に、コーヒーのロースターショップでありながら、エスプレッソマシーン、生豆のストックヤード、焙煎機のショールームの機能が求められた。

目の前に広がる嵐山の景色を、床と屋根で切り取り借景を得るという、日本建築の特徴的な構成を目指す。
障子や襖を開け閉めすることで内部に外部を取り込み、四季折々を感じること。
この土地と既存の建物を眺めながら、そんなことを考えた。

そのものが構造である大きなガラス面でつくられた開放的なファサードは、外部から見られることを意識するとともに、店内からの景観を際立たせるために採用した。
大きく張り延ばした1枚庇は、建築の浮遊感を印象付けつつ、景色をパノラミックに切り取るフレームでもある。
北側一面に配置したコーヒービーンズセラーは、世界各地より厳選した豆の温度湿度を管理するとともに、増改築の続けた築40数年の建築を補強する。

基礎を高く持ち上げ、ひな壇形状の店内アプローチとすることで、店内から見える景色が通行人によって遮られないよう確保するとともに、大雨による浸水を避ける効果もある。
基礎の一部は張り延ばし、ベンチとしての機能を持たせた。
バリスタに最も気持ちのよい場所でコーヒーを煎れてほしいという願いから、最高のビューポイントにカウンターを配置した。
人造大理石研ぎ出しの白いカウンターは、ガラスを隔て外に出ると基礎の腰上となり、建物を半周して半屋外のテーブル席へとつながる。
1杯をつくる所作が渡月橋の借景と重なり、世界唯一の忘れがたい体験となることをイメージした。（加藤匡毅）

Azumaya cafe that captures the scenery in a Japanese way

This project is located in Arashiyama, Kyoto, an area designated as a national historic site and famous for the Togetsukyo bridge over the Katsura River and its bamboo grove, just a few steps away from the busy tourist street.
Like the first shop in Higashiyama, the client intended to be a coffee roastery and a showroom for espresso machines, green bean stockyards, and roasting machines.

The floor and roof are designed to create a borrowed view of the Arashiyama landscape, a characteristic feature of Japanese architecture.
By opening and closing the shoji and fusuma doors, space can bring the outside into the interior, and users can experience the seasons.
I thought about this while looking at the land and the existing building.

The open façade made of large glass surfaces, which is the structure itself, was adopted to be seen from the outside and to highlight the view from inside the shop.
The large eaves of the building give the impression of a floating structure while also providing a panoramic frame for the view.
The coffee beans cellar, located on the north side of the building, controls the temperature and humidity of the carefully selected beans from all over the world and reinforces the 40 years old building, which has been continuously extended and renovated.

The foundations have been raised to create a daisy-shaped approach to the shop, which ensures that the view from the shop is not obstructed by passers-by and avoids flooding during heavy rains.
A part of the foundation has been extended to serve as a bench.
The counter is located at the best point of view for the baristas to have the most comfortable place to brew their coffee.
The white counter, made of polished synthetic marble, is above the waist of the foundation and leads outside through the glass, halfway around the building to the semi-outdoor tables.
I imagined that the act of making a cup of tea would overlap with the borrowed view of the Togetsukyo Bridge, creating a unique and unforgettable experience. (Masaki Kato)
