「渋谷に縁側をつくる」をテーマに、当時3年後に控えていたオリンピックに湧くであろう東京をイメージしながら、その未だ見えぬ景色と宿泊者をつなぐ「際」の過ごし方をデザインの軸に据えることとした。
〈sequence MIYASHITA PARK〉の設計では、客室で過ごす人と景色や街との際、つまり窓と一体化するような過ごし方から 「縁側」という名のプラットフォームが生まれた。
床、壁、天井と家具や照明のインテリアの居心地の良さに加え、縁側によって際にフォーカスすることで、建築の規模からも渋谷の居心地の良さを取り込みたいと考えた。
240の客室にはそれぞれ異なる縁側を設定した。バンクルーム（2段ベッド）では下層のプラットフォームと縁側をL型につなぎコミュニケーションの場を創造し、ツイン、ダブル、キングルームでは収納を兼ねた縁側で景色と一体になる過ごし方を提案、スイートルームではソファと一体構造の音響設備を備えた縁側を用いること、それぞれの部屋にあった過ごし方の実験を試みた。また、一般的には裏に隠れてしまいがちな洗面台をベッドの近くに配置することで、長い時間を街の景色の中で過ごしてもらえるようにしている。
屋上緑化された渋谷区立宮下公園からは、窓際で過ごす宿泊客の営みの一部を垣間見ることができる。都市型のホテルならではの関係性が生まれたのではないか。
一般的にホテル客室には、快適な空調、遮光性の高いファブリック、防音壁といった必要機能がついてくるので、窓から広がる借景の音は聞こえてこない。これを逆手にとり、スイートルームには「借音（しゃくおん）」という概念のもと、外の音を別の形で取り入れる装置をつくり出した。
「#001 TOKYO」と名付けた重量感のある真空管アンプ（増幅装置）は、iPhoneに代表される現代のモバイルオーディオに対するアンチテーゼでもある。
サウンドクリエイターの大河内康晴氏が渋谷界隈でフィールドレコーディングして制作した20分20秒のオリジナルのサウンドを縁側ソファ下のスピーカーから流すことで、宿泊客は音と景色が結びつき、ここでしか味わえない体験をする。感動的な映画を観たあとでは、観る前の自分には戻れないような、「この部屋に訪れる前には戻れない」、そんな不可逆的なTOKYO体験がここにはある。（加藤匡毅）
An urban hotel that connects to the city with scenery and sound
Based on the theme of “creating ENGAWA in Shibuya,” we decided to focus our design on spending time on the “edge,” connecting guests with the still unseen scenery of Tokyo, which was three years away from the Olympic Games.
In the design of 〈sequence MIYASHITA PARK〉, a platform named “ENGAWA” was born from how people spend their time in the guest rooms and become one with the scenery and the city words with the windows.
In addition to the coziness of the interior design of floors, walls, ceilings, furniture, and lighting, We wanted to capture the coziness of Shibuya from the scale of the architecture by focusing on the edge.
Each of the 240 rooms has a different ENGAWA. In the bank rooms (with bunk beds), the lower level platform and the ENGAWA are connected in an L-shape to create a place for communication; in the twin, double, and king rooms, ENGAWA that also serves as a storage space offers a way to be at one with the scenery. In the suite rooms, ENGAWA with a sofa and integrated sound system is used. We used a porch with a sofa and an integrated sound system in the suite rooms, experimenting with different ways to spend time in each room. In addition, the washbasin, which is usually hidden in the back of the room, is placed near the bed so that the guests can spend a long time in the view of the city.
From the rooftop greenery of Shibuya Miyashita Park, we can catch a glimpse of some of the guests activities who spend their time by the window. Thus, I believe that a relationship unique to an urban hotel has been created.
Generally, hotel rooms come with necessary features such as comfortable air conditioning, light-blocking fabrics, and soundproof walls, so the sound of the borrowed scenery spreading out from the window is not audible. Taking advantage of this, We created a device to bring in the outside world’s sound in a different way, based on the concept of “SHAKUON” in the suite.
The heavy tube amplifier (amplification device) named “#001 TOKYO” is the antithesis of today’s mobile audio devices such as the iPhone.
Sound creator Yasuharu Okochi made a 20-minute, 20-second original field recording of the Shibuya area and played it from the speakers under the sofa on the porch, giving guests an experience that can only be experienced here, as sound and scenery are combined. Here is an irreversible experience of Tokyo, where “you can’t go back to the way you were before you visited this room,” just as you can’t go back to the way you were before you watched a moving movie.
