二本松城址である霞ヶ城公園に隣接し、お城やその歴史資料、自然環境などさまざまな魅力を展示・紹介するための施設である。
1階エントランスを入ると右手にお祭り広場が広がり、市の代表的祭りである提灯祭りの山車が展示され、来訪者を華やかに迎え入れる。そのほか360度のパノラマビューの二本松ガイダンス室をはじめ、本格的な常設展示室を備えている。
中央にはお城山へと続く上階への大階段が設けられ、城址探訪の起点となっている。
2階には市民が自由に使うことのできるスペースとして多目的ホールと休憩ラウンジが設けられ、交流スペースとしてワークショップや講演会などさまざまな活動を行うことができる。
休憩ラウンジは屋外のデッキテラスと一体化してお城の箕輪門を眺めながら一服できるカフェスペースとなっている。
さらにこの建物は都市空間の骨格となる役割も担っている。それは駐車場からこの建物内を通り、2階のブリッジを渡り、上段の広場を横切り、箕輪門をくぐり霞ヶ城公園に入る動線の要にあることで、建物内の階段とエレベーターはバリアフリー化のための建築的装置として機能している。
また、外部にあるブリッジとその横の大階段はイベントスペースとしての枡形広場をかたちづくっている。
外観は漆喰の白と石垣のグレーを基調としたデザインとし、シャープでモダンな造形の中に抽象的だが誰もがお城を想像する要素を盛り込むことで、この地域全体のゲートとしてのシンボル性を強く表現した。（青島裕之）
A cultural facility that serves as a gateway to exploration with a large staircase that leads to the castle ruins park
Located adjacent to Kasumigajo Park, the ruins of Nihonmatsu Castle, this facility is designed to exhibit and introduce the castle, its historical materials, its natural environment, and various other attractions.
Entering the entrance on the first floor, visitors are greeted by a festival plaza on their right, where floats from the city’s representative festival, the Chochin Matsuri (lantern festival), are on display. The museum also has full-scale permanent exhibition rooms, including the Nihonmatsu Guidance Room, which offers a 360-degree panoramic view.
In the center of the building, a large staircase leads to the upper floor, which is the starting point for exploring the castle ruins.
On the second floor, there is a multi-purpose hall and a lounge that the public can use freely and as an exchange space for various activities such as workshops and lectures.
The lounge is integrated with an outdoor deck terrace and serves as a café space where visitors can enjoy a drink while gazing at the Minowa Gate of the castle.
The building also serves as the backbone of the urban space. The staircase and elevator in the building function as architectural devices for barrier-free access.
The exterior bridge and the grand staircase next to it from the Masugata Plaza are event spaces.
The exterior design is based on the white of the stucco and the gray of the stone walls. The sharp, modern shape incorporates abstract elements that remind everyone of a castle and strongly expresses the symbolism of the gateway to the entire area.（Hiroyuuki Aoshima）
