予算が理由で新築をあきらめ中古住宅を探していた若いご夫婦と出会い、蜜柑栽培が盛んで年間を通じて温暖な地域である古い分譲角地に、小さな住まいを計画することになった。
量産住宅が土地を埋め尽くすように建ち並ぶ環境下で、敷地は街のなかの公園のような「庭」そのものと捉え、その余白に住まいを構成することで暮らしと風景に普遍的なおおらかさが生まれるのではないかと考えた。庭の起点となる植栽を植え、計画敷地の将来的な庭のあり方を想定しながら、想像の庭の余白に小さな住まいを計画した。
住まいは、居間棟、食堂・台所棟、水回り棟の3つのヴォリュームを寄せ集め、小さなスケールでありながら奥行を与え、おおらかな空間となるようにした。ディテールは、開口枠や掃き出し窓の框を消した納まりとし風景をとりこむ。開口部位置や垂れ壁幅、素材を統一したうえで、場に応じて寸法をあえて崩すことで、場と庭とのつながりをつくり、木々の成長や葉の揺らぎによって時間とともに変化していく居場所の質が形成されるよう試みている。
分譲地でかつローコストであっても、建築と庭の関係性を再考することで見えてくる豊かさが、その住まいの暮らしだけでなく、周辺地域全体に浸透していくことを願っている。（山田誠一）
A house with plenty of white space like a city park
We met a young couple who had given up on building a new house due to budget constraints and were looking for an existing house. We decided to plan a small house on an old corner lot in an area where mandarin orange cultivation flourishes and the climate is mild throughout the year.
In an environment where mass-produced houses are filling up the lot, we considered the site as a “garden” itself, like a park in the city, and thought that by composing the house in the margins of the garden, a universal grandeur would be created in the life and landscape. We planted trees as the starting point of the garden, and while envisioning the garden’s future on the planned site, we planned a small residence on the margin of the imagined garden.
The house has three volumes: a living room, a dining room/kitchen, and a wash, bathroom, and dressing room, which, despite its small scale, gives it depth and creates a generous space. The details are designed to incorporate the landscape by eliminating the opening frames and the stile and rail of the sweep-out windows. The location of the openings, the width of the hanging walls, and the materials used are consistent. Still, the dimensions are intentionally broken down according to the site to create a connection between the site and the garden and to create a quality place that changes over time with the growth of the trees and the shaking of the leaves.
We hope that the richness that can be found by reconsidering the relationship between architecture and garden, even in a low-cost subdivision, will permeate the house’s life and the entire surrounding community. (Seiichi Yamada)
