東京近郊の市街化調整区域内であるため、建物は樹木に覆われ隣家はない。動物や闇夜といった外界から身を守り、室環境とメンテナンス性を優先することから、シンプルな切妻の家型に最小限の開口部を設ける構成となった。開かれ過ぎることも閉じ過ぎることもない適度なバランスを保つため、大きな家型から、いくつかの小さな家型をかき取ることによって、内部を外部化し、外部を内部化することを試みた。
2世帯の玄関を接続する土間ホールは、トンネル状のスペースとして、玄関から森の奥へと通り抜けられる。間伐材や枯れ枝を地消するために、気密性の高い住居において十分な能力を発揮する薪ストーブ「スキャンサーム」を設けた。（二宮 博＋菱谷和子）
The nested house form obscures the inside and outside of the house
Because it is located in an urbanization control area in the suburbs of Tokyo, the building is covered with trees, and there are no neighboring houses. To protect the building from animals and the dark night and to prioritize the indoor environment and ease of maintenance, a simple gabled house form with a minimum of openings was adopted. In order to maintain a proper balance of neither too open nor too closed, we attempted to externalize the interior and internalize the exterior by carving out several smaller house forms from the larger one.
The earthen hall connecting the entrances of the two households is a tunnel-like space that allows visitors to pass from the entrance to the back of the forest. In order to conserve thinned wood and dead branches locally, a wood stove “scantherm” was installed, which is fully capable in an airtight dwelling. (Hiroshi Ninomiya + Kazuko Hishiya)
