群馬県藤岡市の桜山公園は、国の名勝および天然記念物に指定されている冬桜の名所である。春と、秋から冬の年2回お花見が楽しめる。特に11月中旬には冬桜と紅葉の競演が見られる珍しい公園で、上毛かるたの「さ」『三波石と共に名高い冬桜』の場所である。しかしながら観光客が年々減っており、観光に来ても憩いの場所がなく、すぐに帰ってしまう問題があった。
また、地域住民の「いつかお店を開きたい」「食を通じて学びを提供したい」「地域の賑わいを創出したい」をカタチにできる場所を創りたいという希望もあり、使われてない展示室をカフェ棟にリノベーションすることになった。
地域の皆さんにも活用してもらい、また観光の方には周辺地域の魅力を知ってもらえる場所にするために、桜山公園の近くに通う中学生と一緒に、街の課題や魅力を見つけるワークショップを計6回行った。ワークショップでは郊外学習の一環として街歩きや地域住民の方を取材し、最後には中学生によるインタビューをWEBページにまとめ、その情報を街歩きマップとしてカフェに掲示している。
ゆっくり桜を鑑賞できるように新しくベランダを設けた。腰窓だった開口部を大きな掃き出し窓にしたことで、ベランダに直接出られるようになり、もともとの天井の梁も活かした広々とした空間となった。
壁は珪藻土を使用した壁紙に貼り替え、床は磨き直すことで、明るい印象になるように心がけた。
地域や街の魅力を再確認するためのデザインを什器に取り入れていった。石材が特産であることから、地元の石屋に協力いただき、テーブルの材として使用した。リノベーションに伴いどうしても伐採しないといけない桜の木は、地域の森林組合の協力のもとサイドテーブル、ローテーブルとして利用している。
また、ベランダのカウンターは、ワークショップで組み立てや塗装を中学生と行った。塗装やインパクトドライバーを使ったことがない子が多かったため、教員にも協力いただきながら、一緒にDIYを実施した。またこのカフェの名称は公募で募集し、四季を感じられる場所、そしてシェアキッチン型のカフェなのでメニューもその時々で変わることから「しき」となった。

A cafe space that picks up the voice of the town and reveals its local charm
Sakurayama Park in Fujioka City, Gunma Prefecture, is a famous winter cherry blossom viewing spot designated as a national scenic beauty spot and a natural monument. Visitors can view cherry blossoms twice a year, in spring and fall to winter. Especially in mid-November, the park is a rare place where winter cherry blossoms and autumn leaves can be seen in competition. It is the location of the “Sa” “Winter Cherry Blossoms Famous Together with Samba Stone” in the Jomo Karuta. However, the number of tourists has been decreasing year by year, and there was a problem that even if they came for sightseeing, they would soon leave because there was no place to relax.
In addition, there was a desire to create a place where residents could give shape to their hopes of “opening a store someday,” “offering learning through food,” and “creating a lively community,” and it was decided to renovate an unused exhibition room into a café building.
In order to make the café a place that can be utilized by the local community as well as a place where tourists can learn about the charms of the surrounding area, a total of six workshops were held with junior high school students who go to school near Sakurayama Park to find out the issues and charms of the town. The workshops involved walking around the city and interviewing residents as part of their suburban learning. At the end of the workshops, the junior high school students’ interviews were compiled into a web page, and the information was posted in the café as a town walking map.
A new veranda was installed so visitors can enjoy the cherry blossoms at leisure. The window’s opening was replaced with a large sweep-out window, allowing direct access to the veranda, and the original ceiling beams were also utilized to create a spacious area.
The walls were replaced with diatomaceous earth wallpaper, and the floors were refinished to give a brighter impression.
Designs were incorporated into the fixtures to reaffirm the area’s and the city’s charm. Since stone is the area’s specialty, we enlisted the help of a local stonemason to use it as material for the tables. Cherry trees that inevitably had to be cut down for the renovation were used as side tables and low tables with the cooperation of the local forestry cooperative.
In addition, the countertops on the balcony were assembled and painted by junior high school students in a workshop. Since many of the students had never painted or used an impact driver before, they carried out the DIY project together with the help of teachers. The café’s name was also solicited from the public, and the name “Shiki” was chosen because it is a place where one can experience the four seasons and because the menu changes from time to time as it is a shared kitchen-type café.
