築40年ほどの住宅用マンションの一室をオフィスへのコンバージョンする計画。住宅として長く使われていた室内は、生活や時間の痕跡が多く残っていた。改修するにあたりそれらを完全に消し去るのではなく、布や半透明の塗装などの薄い被膜で覆い抽象化することで、無機質ではない浮遊感のある柔らかなワークスペースをつくることを意図した。
住宅用マンションの一室を改修し、オフィスにコンバージョンしたいという依頼内容だった。マンションのリノベーションでは、通常、新しい仕上げで壁を覆う、もしくは既存の仕上げを取り払い、時間の経過を伴った既存の壁、天井などをインテリアとして見せる表現手法が多く見られる。 新しく仕上げを張ってしまうと、これまでの時間の痕跡を無視した新築と変わらない空間となってしまう。しかしながら、既存の壁、天井などをそのまま見せるのは、新しくこの空間を使用するデザイン事務所にとっては表現として少し強すぎると感じた。
間仕切り壁などはすべて取り払い一室空間としたうえで、コンクリート面に張られていた既存の クロスを剥ぎ、露出したコンクリート壁面に半透明の塗装や布などの薄い被膜をかけ、それらを抽象化された表層として取り扱った。また部屋の中心に、執務スペースと打ち合わせスペースとを仕切る大きな建具と布を設け、視線、空気、音などを使用状況によって柔軟に間仕切ることができる計画とした。過去と未来を繋ぐリノベーションの新しいかたちを提案している。（竹田真志）
A one-room renovation that abstracts the traces of time by covering it with a film
This project involves converting a room in a 40-year-old apartment building into an office. The room had been used as a residence for a long time, and many traces of life and time remained. Rather than completely erasing these traces, we intended to cover them with a thin film of fabric or translucent paint and abstract them to create a soft, non-organic workspace with a floating feel.
The request was to renovate a room in a residential condominium and convert it into an office. In apartment renovations, the walls are usually covered with new finishes, or the existing finishes are removed to show the existing walls and ceilings as interior design elements that have been there for a long time. If a new finish is put up, the space will look no different from a newly built building, ignoring the traces of time that have passed. However, we felt that showing the existing walls and ceilings as they are is a little too strong an expression for a design firm that will be using this space for the first time.
We removed all partition walls to create a one-room space, stripped off the existing cloth on the concrete surface, and covered the exposed concrete walls with a thin layer of translucent paint or fabric, treating them as an abstracted surface layer. In the center of the room, a large fixture and cloth were installed to divide the office space from the meeting space, allowing for flexible partitioning of sight, air, and sound depending on the conditions of use.
