国の登録有形文化財に指定されている1928年竣工の邸宅を、1棟貸しの滞在型ホテルにリノベーションするというプロジェクト。オリジナルの建築はフランクロイドライトの愛弟子・遠藤 新 氏によって設計されたもので、ライトのプレーリースタイルの特徴がもっとも強く見られるものの1つである。クライアントからは、「世界中の建築好きが泊まりたくなる」ような価値づくりを求められた。
これからの滞在型ホテルに必要とされるのは本質的な居心地である。その意味で、築約100年の既存建物にはいくつか解決すべき課題があった。冷暖房などの空調設備がなく、照明は極端に照度が低い。オリジナルの家具類の実用性などである。
そこで私たちは、3つのレベルに分けてこの歴史遺産の改修を行った。
【レベル1】家具も含めて再現不可能な貴重な内装意匠が残る室は、歴史を尊重し保存に徹する。間接照明で照度を補いつつ演出効果を加える。（メインサロンなど）
【レベル2】新たな家具を加え歴史性と現代性を融合する。家具はプレーリースタイルの意匠を継承した新しいデザインとする。（プレイルーム、テラスなど）
【レベル3】既存のバックスペースだったところで、意匠的な特徴のないエリアは登録有形文化財による改修制限が緩いため、新たなデザインを取り入れることで新たな価値を付加する。（天井を抜き、吹き抜けとした地下の浴室など）
通常このような歴史的な建築家による歴史遺産の保存は、オリジナルの復元や保存に徹するか、実用性を重視して現代的な家具などを組み合わせるかの2択になりがちである。私たちは、物理的な意匠だけを保存するのではなく、意匠のもつ規範や精神を保存していく「創造的保存」というアプローチを取った。これにより、オリジナルの良さを保存しつつさらに現代的に拡張し、多くのゲストを惹きつけるものとなるようデザインしている。（神谷修平）
A renovation project that preserves the norms and spirit of historic design
This project involved the transformation of a 1928 residence—designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan—into a private, stay-style hotel.
Originally designed by Arata Endo, a renowned disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright, the house is among the most faithful representations of Wright’s Prairie Style in Japan.
The client requested a revival that would inspire architectural enthusiasts from around the world to stay not just for comfort, but for the architecture itself.
In our approach, we embraced what we call Creative Preservation—an attitude that values not only the physical form of heritage architecture, but also the aesthetic norms and the spirit embedded within it.
Rather than treating restoration and modernization as opposing forces, we sought to blend them, spatially and emotionally.
The nearly century-old house presented several challenges: lack of air conditioning, extremely low lighting, and impractical original furnishings.
To address these without diminishing the building’s historical aura, we implemented a layered strategy:
Level 1: Respectful Preservation
Irreplaceable spaces—including original built-ins and interiors—were preserved. Indirect lighting was added to improve illumination while enhancing the atmosphere (e.g., the main salon).
Level 2: Interpretive Dialogue
New furniture was designed in the spirit of Prairie Style, integrating with the historic setting while introducing contemporary function and tactility (e.g., playroom, terrace).
Level 3: Generative Contrast
In areas lacking architectural character—such as back-of-house spaces—we introduced new spatial interventions, including a vaulted basement bathroom, to add experiential value.
Where many preservation projects fall into a binary—restoration vs. modernization—we pursued a synthesis.
Creative Preservation allowed us to expand the life of the original architecture without erasing its essence, offering guests an experience that is both historically grounded and emotionally resonant. (Shuhei Kamiya)
