名古屋の喫茶文化を受けついだ親子2代にわたる純喫茶として「喫茶ニューポピー」を手掛けるクライアントが、 起業後、最初に借りた場所であり「原点」として借り続けていた小さな雑居ビルの3階をリノベーションした。飲食業を始めたい人が実験したり、遊びや趣味の延長で知人を招いたり、遠方のお店が出張営業として間借りでき るキッチン付きのレンタル喫茶スペースである。戦後の高度経済成長期から続く喫茶店文化がもつノスタル ジックな雰囲気を現代的なデザインで再解釈した、少人数制の社交場として計画した。
ここで出会う人や話す会話を、空間体験とともに記憶に残してもらうことに、計画の意義や価値を求めた。どうしたら鮮烈な印象と安らぎを両立させ、内省と対話を生むことができるかを考えた。
狭い階段を上がり重い鉄扉を開けると、真紅のビロードカーテンとベンチが3mのテーブルを囲っている。影を帯びた艶やかで静かな赤は、都会の喧騒を忘れさせるシェルターのような役割を担う。時間そのものを忘れ、静かに自分や他者と向き合える空間として設えた。解体された築100年以上の長屋の大鴨居をリメイクしたロングテーブルは、まるで即興の家族のように見知らぬ人々を1つの食卓へと引き寄せる。マッシブな彫刻のような テーブル脚を造作し固定した。
厨房の壁から天井は、一辺300mm、厚さ0.3mmの銅板約300枚で構成されている。本来は屋根を葺くための伝統的な工法である菱葺きを採用した。茶室や演劇的なアプローチから着想しており、人と人との偶然の出会いや会 話の時間を「舞台」のように演出する。訪れた人はステージのような空間へと導かれ、まるで演劇体験の一部であるかのように席に着く。包み込むように有機的な曲線で光をやわらかく反射する銅板天井は感情的な深みを高め、対照的に無機質な床・カウンターは静かな会話のための場所を生み出している。ランプシェードとカウンターチェアは、半透明のFRPで型から特注した。琥珀色の光を受け止め、空間に溶け込む。
半世紀前に建てられた建物に呼応するように、あるいはもっと長い時間を積み重ねた古材や、これから新しい時 間を積み重ねていくための経年変化を受け入れる素材を選んだ。ビロードは使い込まれた美しさへ、銅板は光沢ある赤橙色からマットな暗褐色へ、FRPは生成りから赤褐色へ。これらは調和だけでなく、異質な素材感の対比によって確かな個性を生み、時間の経過とともに昇華していく。
文化的感性と素材への実験的アプローチによるデザインは、商業的な過剰さではなく、密集した都市環境における、感情的な安らぎと静かな時間の深みに焦点を当てている。忘れ去られたようなビルの中で、重層的な時間は訪れた人の記憶と交わりながら、新たな始まりを受け入れる「場所の記憶」として積み重なっていく。

A rental cafe space that serves as a quiet gathering place in the city
POPPY Lounge is a renovation of the third floor of a small mixed-use building that the client first rented after starting the business and continued to keep as a personal point of origin. Operated by the same client behind Kissaten New Poppy—a two-generation kissaten rooted in Nagoya’s coffee culture—the space functions as a shared café environment with a kitchen, where aspiring food entrepreneurs can experiment, friends can gather through hobbies and personal projects, and cafés from other cities can temporarily operate through pop-up events. The project reinterprets the nostalgic atmosphere of Japan’s postwar kissaten culture through a contemporary spatial language, creating an intimate social space for small gatherings.
The project places value on allowing encounters and conversations that occur within the space to remain in memory alongside the spatial experience itself. The design explores how strong visual impression and emotional calmness might coexist, creating an environment that encourages both introspection and dialogue.
Ascending a narrow staircase and opening a heavy steel door, visitors enter a room where deep crimson velvet curtains and benches surround a three-meter communal table. The shadowed and muted red tones function as a shelter from the noise of the city, creating a place where visitors can momentarily lose awareness of time and quietly confront themselves and others. The long table was crafted from a massive beam reclaimed from a demolished townhouse more than one hundred years old. Like an improvised family, it draws strangers toward a shared table. The sculptural table legs were custom-built and permanently fixed in place.
The walls and ceiling of the kitchen area are clad with approximately 300 copper panels measuring 300 mm square and 0.3 mm thick. The panels were installed using Hishibuki, a traditional roofing technique typically used for copper roofs. Inspired by tea rooms and theatrical staging, the copper surfaces transform chance encounters and conversations into something resembling a performance. Visitors are guided into the space as though entering a stage set, taking their seats as participants within a quiet theatrical experience. The softly curved copper ceiling reflects light in a gentle and immersive way, deepening the emotional atmosphere, while the contrasting inorganic floor and counter create a calm setting for conversation. The lampshades and counter chairs were custom fabricated from translucent FRP molds, capturing amber-colored light and dissolving softly into the space.
Materials were selected to resonate with the half-century-old building itself, as well as with reclaimed elements that have already accumulated long spans of time, and materials capable of gracefully aging into the future. Velvet acquires a worn richness through use, copper transforms from bright reddish-orange into dark matte brown, and FRP gradually shifts from pale translucency toward reddish tones. Rather than seeking harmony alone, the project embraces contrasts between materials to establish a distinct identity that continues to mature over time.
Through a culturally sensitive and experimental approach to materials, the project focuses not on commercial spectacle, but on emotional calmness and the depth of quiet time within a dense urban environment. Inside a building that might otherwise have been forgotten, layers of time intertwine with the memories of those who visit, gradually accumulating as an evolving memory of place that continues to welcome new beginnings.
