日本の植物学の父であり、朝ドラの主人公としても注目を集めた牧野富太郎の出生地、高知県佐川町に位置する道の駅。敷地はもと日本の植物学の父であり、朝ドラの主人公としても注目を集めた牧野富太郎の出生地、高知県佐川町に位置する道の駅。敷地はもともとヘリポートであった。プロポーザルの要領では、既存舗装を駐車場として活用するために、敷地の西側への建物の配置を求められていた。しかし、与えられた条件を鵜呑みにするのではなく、この場所のもてる魅力を最大限に活かすために、整備する必要があった敷地南側の広場との連携がより強くなり、歩車分離により利用者の安全性を高める効果を鑑み、広場に寄り添うように敷地南側に建物を置き、広場や周囲の自然との連携を強める配置とした。
牧野博士の名前を冠した道の駅に相応しいように、彼が愛した佐川町の魅力や自然の素晴らしさを体験できるように、佐川の文化、歴史、自然、産業が共演する構成とした。牧野博士の生家がある上町の歴史的な切妻屋根の町並みと、山々の折り重なる美しい風景に心を揺さぶられ、切妻屋根が並ぶように建物を配置した。2つの切妻屋根を、世界初となる木造カステン構造による緩かにたわんだ屋根が、四季折々の表情を見せる背後の斜面の花畑を切り取り、来訪者がいちばん初めに目にする風景としてお出迎えをする。地質の町としても有名な佐川町から派生し、おもてなしの意味を込めた「ごちそう佐川」という運営コンセプトに応える「ご地層の帯」と呼ぶ版築壁を、建物の内外に跨るように配置した。ご地層の帯には観光案内の掲示、特産品の販売コーナーの設置、化石を埋めるなど、佐川町の魅力をたっぷり体験できる工夫を施した。「ご地層の帯」は佐川町の産業振興ならびに広報・PRの場として機能するだけでなく、人々の活動を屋外へと導き、敷地いっぱいに賑わいを拡げる役割を果たす。
さらに、建物は雁行させることで、どこにいても外への視線が抜け、周囲の雄大な自然を身近に感じることができる。入口から空間両端を視認できないため、利用者は奥へ奥へと誘われ、芝生広場へ辿り着く。そこは佐川の美しい山々に囲まれた居心地の良い広場で、子供たちが思い思いに走り回り、自然と触れ合うことができる。活動が建物内で完結するのではなく、自然と建築がお互いに寄り添い、共存する関係を生む、佐川町の自然を愛した牧野さんらしい道の駅となった。（中本剛志、田中裕一）

However, rather than considering the given conditions, we decided to place the building on the south side of the site so that it would be more closely linked to the plaza on the south side of the site, which needed to be improved to maximize the attractiveness of the site. In light of the effect of the separation of pedestrians and vehicles to increase the safety of the users, we decided to place the building on the south side of the site so that it would be closer to the plaza and the surrounding nature. This layout strengthens the connection with the plaza and the surrounding nature.
As befitting a roadside station bearing Dr. Makino’s name, the building was designed to showcase the culture, history, nature, and industry of Sagawa so that visitors can experience the charms and natural splendor of the town he loved so much. Inspired by the historic gabled-roof townscape of Kamimachi, where Dr. Makino’s birthplace is located, and the beautiful scenery of the mountains, the buildings were arranged so that the two gabled roofs, with their gently sloping wooden casten structures, the first of their kind in the world, cut through the flower fields on the slope behind them, which show the changing expressions of the four seasons, It greets visitors as the first scenery they see. The “Gochiso Sagawa” concept is derived from the town of Sagawa, which is also famous for its geological features, and is intended to provide hospitality. The “Gochiso no Belt” was designed to allow visitors to experience the charms of the town of Sagawa by displaying tourist information, setting up a special products sales corner, and burying fossils in it. The “Gochisei no Obi” serves not only as a platform to promote Sagawa’s industries and public relations but also as a catalyst for outdoor activities, filling the entire site with activity.
Furthermore, the building’s glass path allows people to look out from anywhere in the building and feel close to the magnificent nature around them. Because both ends of the space cannot be seen from the entrance, visitors are led deeper and deeper into the lawn area, where the beautiful mountains of Sagawa surround them. This is a cozy open space surrounded by the beautiful mountains of Sagawa, where children can run around and interact with nature as they please. The roadside station is not a place where activities are completed inside the building, but rather a place where nature and architecture coexist in harmony with each other.
