世界遺産勝連城跡の10代目城主「阿麻和利」（あまわり）の歴史物語を日々、伝承活動している地域の子供たちを支えていく期待を込め、常設展示室の空間内に大型スクリーンやステージ機能を強化整備。通常の展示鑑賞だけでなく臨場感溢れる子供たちのパフォーマンスによって、より感動的に、この地の歴史を学べる新感覚のミュージアムとして地域の文化発展に貢献していく。
敷地周辺で採掘される琉球石灰岩を積み重ねて構築された勝連城跡は、世界遺産に登録されており、その風格と馴染むよう今回の計画では外観だけでなく内装の仕上げにも同じ琉球石灰岩を積極的に採用。視覚的にかつての伝統が想起されるよう全盛期の空間デザインを再現するとともに、地元石材を有効活用した〈あまわりパーク〉が、これからのサスティナブルな空間デザインを牽引していくことを意図した。
城壁の曲線美をモチーフとした緩やかな弧を描くガラス張りのホワイエを、中庭広場や回廊と連続的かつ曲線的に構成させていくことで、空間の内部と外部の枠を超え、周辺緑地、地域へと拡がる。おおらかな空間拡張を可能にした、「開かれた博物館」が多様な文化を包み込み、育める交流の場として地域へ潤いを与え続けていく役割を果たす。（久田友一）
A museum that responds to World Heritage sites, using Ryukyu limestone as a finishing material
With the hope of supporting local children who are engaged in daily activities to pass on the historical story of Amawari, the 10th lord of the World Heritage Site “Katsuren Castle Ruins,” the permanent exhibition room has been enhanced with a large screen and stage functions. In addition to the usual exhibition viewing, the children’s performances will add a sense of realism, making it a new kind of museum where visitors can learn about the history of this area more movingly, contributing to the cultural development of the region.
The Katsuren Castle Ruins, constructed by stacking Ryukyu limestone quarried from the surrounding area, are registered as a World Heritage Site. In line with its grandeur, this plan actively incorporates the same Ryukyu limestone not only in the exterior but also in the interior finishes. The design aims to evoke the visual traditions of the past by recreating the spatial design of its heyday, while also utilizing local stone materials in the “Amarui Park” to lead the way in sustainable spatial design for the future.
By seamlessly integrating the curved glass foyer, inspired by the castle walls’ curved beauty, with the courtyard plaza and corridors in a continuous and curved composition, the design transcends the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces, expanding outward to the surrounding greenery and the local community. This “open museum,” which enables expansive spatial expansion, will continue to fulfill its role as a place of exchange that embraces and nurtures diverse cultures, bringing vitality to the region.
