所有者が要介護となり、家の前の道が細くデイサービスの車両が入れなかったため、やむなく施設入所となり長年空き家となっていた岬の古民家。雨漏りが進んでいたこの建物を借り受け、所有者であるおじいさんが一時帰宅できる家、多様なリノベーションの手法を体感できる展示場、1棟貸しの宿という3つの機能を備えた施設として再生したのが〈umieru〉である。
宿泊施設としては、メゾネット形式の2ユニットで最大12名が滞在可能。キッチンやランドリーを備え、長期滞在にも対応する。伊根の舟屋や天橋立など、丹後の観光を楽しむ拠点としての利用も想定されている。
展示場としては、外装を地域の町並みに調和する焼杉板と瓦で仕上げ、内部は「shiro」と「kuro」という対照的な2つのユニットに分割。shiroは白を基調とした明るく軽やかな空間、kuroは陰影と落ち着きを強調した空間とした。1階は新築のように刷新し、2階は古民家の梁を活かすことで、4つの異なるリノベーションの表情を1棟の中で体験できる構成とした。
この建物は、「なるべくリノベ」で空き家を次世代に繋げるというU設計室の姿勢を体現し、丹後の風景を守り継ぐリノベーションの実験場ともいえる事例である。（大垣優太）
A hotel where visitors can experience diverse renovation techniques
The old house on the cape had stood vacant for years after its owner required nursing care, and the narrow road in front prevented day service vehicles from accessing it, forcing the owner into a care facility. We leased this building, which had suffered significant water damage. We revitalized it as “umieru”—a facility combining three functions: a home where the elderly owner could temporarily return, an exhibition space showcasing diverse renovation techniques, and whole-house rental accommodation.
As lodging, it offers two maisonette-style units accommodating up to 12 guests. Equipped with a kitchen and laundry facilities, it supports extended stays. It is also envisioned as a base for exploring Tango attractions like Ine’s Funaya houses and Amanohashidate.
As an exhibition space, the exterior was finished with charred cedar boards and tiles to harmonize with the local streetscape. The interior is divided into two contrasting units: “shiro” and “kuro”. Shiro is a bright, airy space based on white, while kuro emphasizes shadows and tranquility. The first floor was completely renovated to feel like new construction, while the second floor incorporates the original beams of the old house. This allows visitors to experience four distinct renovation styles within a single building.
This building embodies the U architects’ philosophy of “renovating as much as possible” to pass vacant houses on to the next generation. It serves as an experimental site for renovations that preserve and pass on the landscapes of Tango. (Yuta Ogaki)
