水面の波紋のように、会話が広がるゲストハウス

場所は栃木県那須塩原市。 緑あふれる木々に囲まれ、那珂川に寄り添う那須フィッシュランド内の敷地に休館していた宿泊施設がある。この建物をリノベーションし、那須の豊かな自然を楽しみながら、人と人が出会い、交流し、新たな仕事や暮らしのきっかけが生まれる場として、那須移住を見据えたゲストハウスへと蘇らせる。

ゲストハウスは自炊を基本とする簡易宿所である。だからこそ、料理をつくり、食べる場所をこの施設の中心に据えた。料理を囲み、自然と人が集い、旅行者同士が言葉を交わすことで、新しい関係や出来事が生まれていく。そんな広がりのある場を目指している。

その交流を促す中心空間として設けたのが「jamフロア」である。このフロアは、那珂川と魚釣りをコンセプトにしている。川で魚釣りをするとき、人は高いところから釣ったり、川辺に腰を下ろしたり、川の中に入ったりと、それぞれが地形を読み取りながら自分の居場所を見つける。その所作や感覚を空間に落とし込んだ。

空間を流れる大きな「川」は、人数や使い方に応じてベンチやテーブル、小上がりへと姿を変える。テーブルと椅子という固定された関係をあえてつくらず、用途や季節、その日の気分に合わせて、各々が心地よい居場所を選べる構成としている。丸いおぼんを囲んで生まれる会話は、水面に広がる波紋のように、ゆっくりと周囲へそして地域へ伝わっていくことを想像した。

仕上げにも釣り場の風景を重ねた。床には釣り場に見られる石や白い砂、土の色を組み合わせた六角形のタイルを用い、その上にウッドデッキ、さらに最上部を那珂川が流れる構成としている。ランダムに配置した電球は、川辺を舞うホタルのイメージ。この空間は、この立地、この環境、そのすべてから着想を得て生まれた。

A guesthouse where conversation ripples out like waves on water

The location is Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture. Surrounded by lush green trees and nestled along the Naka River, within the grounds of Nasu Fish Land, lies a dormant lodging facility. This building will be renovated and reborn as a guesthouse envisioned for Nasu relocation. In this place, people meet, interact, and find new opportunities for work and life while enjoying Nasu’s abundant nature.

The guesthouse is a simple self-catering facility. Precisely for this reason, the space for cooking and eating is placed at the heart of the facility. Gathering around meals, people naturally come together, and travelers exchange words, giving birth to new relationships and experiences. We aim to create a space with such expansive potential.

The central space designed to foster this interaction is the “jam floor.” This floor conceptually draws from the Naka River and fishing. When fishing in a river, people find their own spot—fishing from high ground, sitting along the bank, or wading into the water—each reading the terrain to choose their place. We’ve translated those actions and sensations into the space.

The large “river” flowing through the space transforms into benches, tables, or raised seating areas depending on the number of people and how it’s used. We deliberately avoided fixed relationships like tables and chairs, creating a layout where each person can choose a comfortable spot based on purpose, season, or mood. We imagined conversations sparked around a round tray spreading like ripples on water, slowly reaching those around and extending into the community.

The finishes also echo the scenery of the fishing spot. Hexagonal tiles of stones, white sand, and earth tones, found at fishing spots, cover the floor. Above this lies a wooden deck, with the Nakagawa River flowing along the topmost layer. Randomly placed light bulbs evoke the image of fireflies dancing along the riverbank. This space was born entirely from inspiration drawn from this location, this environment, and everything within it.
