AGIRLSは、和歌山に集積する丸編みニット生産工場の卓越した技術を背景に、高い品質と着心地の良さそしてデザイン性に優れた素材を提供するテキスタイルメーカーで、海外からの評価も高く、そのマーケット戦略は世界を向いている。そうした国際的な展望を抱きつつ、地域に根ざした若手の育成を見据え、あえて地元の和歌山に新たな本社ビルを建設することを決意した。
敷地は、200段を超える石段を一気に上る高台の紀三井寺から、連なる丘陵を北に辿った麓に位置する。すくそばの山裾からは紀三井寺三井水（さんせいすい）の1つ、吉祥水が湧き出ている。
機能はオフィスとショールームとショップ。オフィスには執務空間とミーティングルームとエグゼクティブルームがあり、ショールームには国内外からのゲストを迎え、製品を紹介する展示空間と過去の製品をストックするアーカイブがある。ショップは将来の事業展開に向けた「可能性の空間」である。
オフィスとショールームを立体的に結ぶL字型平面にまとめた棟と、独立したショップ棟、この2つの棟はブリッジで繋がり、中庭を囲んで向かい合う。アプローチはこの中庭を通ってエントランスホールに向かう。エントランスドアを入ると天空から光が落ちる2層吹き抜けのホールが待ち受け、吹き抜けに面したブリッジが東の丘の緑に向かって突き出たミーティングルームと西のオフィスを結んでいる。ブリッジにはちょっとしたミーティングのためのソファやテーブルが配される。3階には屋上テラスをもつエグゼクティブルームがある。周囲に高い建物がないので、万葉集にも詠まれた名勝和歌浦を遠くに望むこともできる。
街角の風景を形成するショップは金属板で覆われ、コーナーに面した部分のみ紀の国らしく木の素材を用い、構造は鉄骨造である。一方、オフィス／ショールーム棟はRC造で、2階建てのコンクリート打放しの建物上部に白いペントハウスが乗る構成とし、中庭に面した部分には一部木を用いた。さまざまな素材を組み合わせることによって、多彩なテキスタイル素材を提供する企業であることを暗示した。アーカイブは2階建ての高さに3層の床を重ねて大きな収容量を確保する工夫をし、そこにAGIRLSの過去と未来の記憶が保存されていく。

An office where functions and spaces intersect in three dimensions across the courtyard
AGIRLS is a textile manufacturer that leverages the exceptional expertise of Wakayama’s concentrated circular knitting production facilities to provide high-quality, comfortable, and design-focused materials. Highly regarded internationally, its market strategy is globally oriented. While embracing this international outlook, the company deliberately chose to build its new headquarters in its local Wakayama base, aiming to nurture young talent rooted in the region.
The site is located at the foot of rolling hills extending north from the elevated Kimiidera Temple, reached by ascending over 200 stone steps. Nearby, at the base of the mountains, flows Kichijōsui, one of the three sacred waters (Sanseisui) of Kimiidera.
The functions are office, showroom, and shop. The office includes workspaces, meeting rooms, and executive rooms. The showroom features an exhibition space to welcome domestic and international guests and introduce products, along with an archive storing past products. The shop serves as a “space of possibilities” for future business expansion.
The L-shaped building, which vertically connects the office and showroom, and the separate shop building face each other across a central courtyard. The approach leads through this courtyard to the entrance hall. Upon entering the door, a two-story atrium hall awaits, flooded with light from above. A bridge facing the atrium connects the meeting room, which juts out toward the greenery of the eastern hill, with the western office. The bridge features sofas and tables for casual meetings. The third floor houses an executive room with a rooftop terrace. With no tall buildings nearby, it offers distant views of Wakaura Bay, a scenic spot celebrated in the Man’yōshū poetry anthology.
The shop, forming the street corner landscape, is clad in metal panels. Only the corner sections use wood, reflecting the Kii region’s character, while the structure is steel-framed. The office/showroom building, meanwhile, is reinforced concrete. It features a white penthouse atop a two-story exposed-concrete structure, with wood used partially on the courtyard-facing side. This combination of diverse materials subtly suggests the company’s role as a provider of a wide range of textile materials. The archive employs a clever design: stacking three floors within a two-story height to secure substantial storage capacity. Here, AGIRLS’ memories of the past and future will be preserved.
