日本各地に残る古来の民家は、素朴でありながら力強くその土地に活着し、民衆の知恵と工夫が蓄積した住空間を今に伝えている。現代の住宅でも、そんな民家の在り方を少しでも引き継げないかと考えることがある。
この地に50年以上住まう夫妻にとっての終の住処となり、ゆくゆくは同居する娘さんへと受け継がれるであろう平屋の建替え計画である。敷地は山形市内の由緒ある神社から伸びる桜並木に面しており、施主が年月をかけて育てた庭の樹木や、大谷石を切り出して設えられた塀が通りの風景の一部となっていた。
そんな既存の外構を保存しつつ、庭の日照と風通しを改善するように間口7間、奥行4間のシンプルな切妻屋根の架構を敷地の北側に寄せて配置した。
要望を整理する中で、ゆとりのある玄関ホール、寝室、水回りといった機能を北側に、趣味の土間、LDK、和室といったハレの場を南側に集約し、それらを田の字型に繋ぐ回遊性のある間取りとなった。それぞれの空間は土間、板間、畳の間といった床材の設えや平天井の有無によって落着きあるスケールに分節されながらも、頭上で東西に連続していく梁によって広がりのある居心地が共有されるようにした。
襖を開けると、南側に面して連続する畳座と障子によって居間と和室が一体となり、さらに窓と障子をあけ放つと、畳座は庭、桜並木の風景へと向かう縁側となる。庭と住宅の境にある濡縁は塀に使われた大谷石を施主が自ら切り出し、新たに生活の風景に加えたものである。
夏は軒と庭に繁る木々が日陰をつくり、濡縁への打ち水でも涼をとることができる。冬は畳座の立ち上りが雪止めとなり、南からの低い太陽光が室内を満たすよう軒の出を調整した。
このように、民家に見られる要素を、現代の住空間の要望のなかに1つひとつ編み込んでいった。
今後も成長を続ける庭と桜並木がなす四季の中で、架構の内外に広がりのある暮らしが営まれていくことを予感している。
A one-story house that unravels and incorporates the universal elements of the ancient private house
The ancient private houses in various parts of Japan are simple yet firmly rooted in their local communities, and they transmit the wisdom and ingenuity of the people in their living spaces to the present. I wonder if carrying over even a little of this private house style into the modern home is possible.
This project is to reconstruct a one-story house that will be the final home for a couple who have lived in this area for over 50 years and will eventually be passed down to their daughter, who will live with them. The site faces a row of cherry blossom trees extending from a historic shrine in Yamagata City, and the trees in the garden that the owners had spent years nurturing and the wall cut out of Oyaishi stone were part of the street scenery. While preserving the existing exterior, a simple gable roof structure with a seven-ken frontage and four-ken depth was placed on the site’s north side to improve sunlight and ventilation in the garden.
In the process of organizing the requirements, the spacious entrance hall, the bedrooms, and the water supply were placed on the north side, and the recreational areas, such as the earthen floor for hobbies, the LDK, and the Japanese-style room were concentrated on the south side, creating a circulation layout that connects them in a figure of a rice field. Each of these spaces is divided into a calm scale by the flooring materials (earthen floor, wooden floor, and tatami room) and the presence or absence of flat ceilings. At the same time, the continuous east-west beams overhead create a sense of expansive comfort.
When the sliding doors are opened, the living room and Japanese-style room are united by the continuous tatami mats and shoji screens facing the south, and when the windows and shoji screens are opened, the tatami mats become a veranda leading to the garden and the view of cherry trees. The open verandah border between the park and the house was cut out of Oyaishi stone, which the owner used for the wall and added to the house’s landscape. In summer, the eaves and the trees growing in the garden provide shade, and the water sprinkled on the open verandah can be used to cool off. In winter, the rising edge of the tatami-za serves as a snow stop, and the eaves are adjusted so that low sunlight from the south fills the interior.
In this way, elements found in private houses were woven one by one into the demands of contemporary living space.
The garden and rows of cherry blossom trees will continue to grow, and we anticipate an expansive lifestyle inside and outside the structure in the coming seasons. (Hiroki Nakadoi)
