香川県さぬき市津田町の北部に位置する北山集落。その一角にある急峻な斜路を降りた先の耕作放棄された土地へ、小さな3棟のホテルを建てる計画。
各棟は2.73m四方ユニットを組み合わせた最小限建築であり、狭隘な平場しかない斜面地に建てることの必然から導き出された。1階をS造、小屋組みを木造とし、風景に応じた自由な開口部を実現している。各部材は人力・ユンボで搬入可能かつ寸法・重量を1～4人で手運びできるものにした。それらの材料は原則、建設資材あるいはホームセンターで入手可能で、コスト調整と更新性を担保した。
こうしたありふれた素材にホテルとしての非日常性を体感できる仕上げを取り込み、組み合わせることで、身近でありながら畏敬の念を抱く他者として振る舞う建築を目指した。施設名である「mimoro」は「御諸」であり、諸々を守る神聖な場を意味する。市街地から離れた集落部という僻地に再び息を吹き込み、土地を見守り、共に歩む存在だ。
敷地の一部である果樹畑は施主が集落住民から継承し、植栽の多くも住民の所有地から山採りした。宿の運営がそうした住民交流や集落の資源循環を育み、共生関係を築いてゆく。（若林拓哉）
A minimalist hotel rooted in the sloping terrain, shaped by 2.73m modules
Quietly nestled within the Kitayama settlement of Sanuki City, Kagawa Prefecture, three small hotels now stand where abandoned farmland once lay at the foot of a steep slope. The undulating terrain, which makes it difficult to bring in large construction machinery, inspired a minimalist design that harmonizes with the surrounding nature.
The steep, narrow slopes presented significant construction hurdles, making the delivery of large building units nearly impossible. Yet, these very constraints sparked the creation of a minimalist architecture. Each building is composed of 2.73-meter square modules, a solution to the limited flat areas available for construction. The first floor features a steel frame and a wooden roof, with flexible openings that respond to the surrounding landscape. Every component was designed to be of a size and weight that can be carried by one to four people, using manpower or small excavators.
The materials used were primarily selected from readily available construction supplies and products from home improvement stores, balancing cost efficiency with long-term maintainability. By combining these ordinary materials with finishes unique to a hotel, the architecture aims to evoke both familiarity and awe-inspiring.
The facility’s name, “mimoro,” is derived from the Japanese word “御諸,” meaning “a sacred place that protects all things.” This reflects the traditional Japanese reverence for nature, in which mountains and forests are regarded as sacred. This hotel breathes new life into this remote village, watching over the land and walking alongside the local community.
Part of the site includes an orchard inherited by the client from village residents, and many of the surrounding plants were gathered from their land. The operation of the inn fosters interaction among residents and encourages the circulation of resources within the village, building a truly symbiotic relationship. (Takuya Wakabayashi)
