敷地は日光市内に位置し、周囲には男体山をはじめとする山々が連なる。本計画は、夫婦と子供3人が暮らすための住宅である。日々の慌ただしさの中にあって心安らぐひとときを過ごせる、「隠れ場」のような住まいを施主は望んだ。
そこで、住宅でありながらも自然の一部として、そこにあり続けてきた岩場のような佇まいを目指した。
周囲に住宅が近接していることから、正対を避けるために建物全体を敷地に対して斜めに配置した。渦巻き状の平面に沿って雁行させた大小さまざまな立方体のボリュームが、岩を想起させる。その間に生まれた空間は、先を見通せない平面構成により、洞窟を思わせる構成となっている。ボリュームは3,600mm角の大きなものから900mm角の小さなものまで多様で、居室や水回り、収納などを納める。洞窟のような空間はリビングやダイニング、廊下といった役割を担い、幅や高さを変化させながらひと繋がりに続いていく。
中心に向かうにつれて天井は高くなり、ダイニングを経てリビングへといたる。一方、外周に近づくにつれて天井は低くなり、ヒューマンスケールを強調したより私的な空間へと移行していく。そこに隣接する各個室は2層構成とし、廊下から入るとまず大きな空間が広がり、その奥にもう1つ小さな空間を設けた。家族それぞれが洞窟を開拓するように自由に使える場とし、暮らしの変化に柔軟に対応できるよう計画している。
開口部は大きく設けず、ボリュームの隙間に小窓を点在させることで、プライバシーを確保しつつ採光を取り入れた。小窓は空や庭木を切り取り、時間帯によって差し込む光の角度を変化させることで、室内にいながら外の様子や時間の移ろいを感じさせる。リビングにたどり着いた先では、岩が崩れかけたような様相を見せる空間が現れ、多くの光を取り込む開放的な場となっている。
この住処が家族を包み込み、変化していく暮らしに寄り添う拠点となることを願っている。（八木敦之）
A residence with a staggered floor plan featuring cave-like depth
The site is located within Nikko City, surrounded by mountains including Mount Nantai. This project is a residence for a couple and their three children. The clients desired a home that would serve as a “hiding place,” offering moments of peace amidst the daily hustle and bustle.
Therefore, while being a house, it aims to have the presence of a rock formation that has always been part of the natural landscape.
To avoid direct alignment with the closely situated neighboring houses, the entire building is positioned diagonally on the site. Cubic volumes of varying sizes, staggered along a spiral-like plane, evoke the image of rocks. The spaces created between them, formed by a layout that prevents direct sightlines, create a cave-like composition. Volumes range from large 3,600mm squares to small 900mm squares, housing living spaces, wet areas, and storage. The cave-like spaces serve as living rooms, dining areas, and corridors, flowing seamlessly while varying in width and height.
Ceilings rise toward the center, leading from the dining area to the living room. Conversely, ceilings lower towards the periphery, transitioning into more private spaces, emphasizing human scale. Adjacent individual rooms feature a two-level configuration: entering from the hallway reveals an ample space, with a smaller space tucked behind it. These spaces are designed for each family member to use freely, much like exploring a cave, and to flexibly adapt to changes in daily life.
Large openings are minimized; instead, small windows are scattered within the gaps between volumes. This ensures privacy while allowing natural light to enter. These small windows frame views of the sky and garden trees, and the changing angle of light throughout the day allows occupants to sense the outside world and the passage of time while indoors. At the end of the path leading to the living room, a space resembling a crumbling rock formation appears, creating an open area that captures abundant light.
