広島湾の海岸線から北に徒歩15分ほど登った丘の上の角地にあるこの住宅は、南側には瀬戸内海や宮島といった眺望が望め、北側には緑ゆたかな林が広がる、静かで落ち着いた環境にある。
築34年を数える木造2階建ての住宅はしっかりとした造りで、状態も築年数と照らし合わせても非常に良く、大きく手を加えなくても暮らすことはできそうだった。
クライアントは3回目のオーナーチェンジで所有することとなり、今まで丁寧に使われてきたこと感じ取ることのできるこの住宅を受け継ぎ、住み繋ぐこととなった。
夫婦と子どもの3人家族。それぞれの趣味や暮らしかたを互いに尊重しながらも、各部屋をゆるやかに繋ぐ空間設計を行なった。障子や壁紙といった素材は、外の光を柔らかく受け止め空間に静かな変化をもたらし、また屋根の小屋組から洩れるあらたな空間は、新しい生活に、ささやかな余白をもたらす。
構造を変更したり、大きな手を加えなくとも、材料の選定を丁寧に行い、施工方法も工夫することで、
住み手のライフスタイルに合った空間をデザインできること実感できたプロジェクトになった。
これから、じっくりと暮らしながら家が育っていく。

A home between remodeling and renovation
This house sits on a corner lot atop a hill about a 15-minute walk north from the coastline of Hiroshima Bay. It enjoys a quiet, peaceful setting with views of the Seto Inland Sea and Miyajima to the south, and lush green forests stretching out to the north.
The 34-year-old two-story wooden house is solidly built and, considering its age, is in remarkably good condition. It seemed livable without major renovations.
The clients became the third owners to take possession. They inherited this home, which clearly had been carefully maintained, and chose to live in it and continue its legacy.
A family of three: husband, wife, and child. While respecting each other’s hobbies and lifestyles, the spatial design gently connects each room. Materials like shoji screens and wallpaper softly filter the outside light, bringing quiet variation to the spaces. Additionally, the new space created by the roof trusses offers a subtle margin for their new life.
This project demonstrated that even without major structural changes or extensive alterations, careful material selection and thoughtful construction methods can create spaces that fit residents’ lifestyles.
Now, the house will grow alongside them as they live in it, slowly and steadily.
