輪郭のテーブル / INTERMEDIA

用途に応じて、空間の役割と表情を変えるテーブル

長崎県のハブのような位置にある諫早市。その中心部の商店街の中腹にある築95年・国登録有形文化財に登録された旧銀行がリノベーションされることになり、その1階に50人規模のレストランを依頼された。単なる飲食店というわけではなく、トークイベントやセミナー、演奏会、結婚式など地域の多目的な拠点施設として運営していきたいということだった。しかし予算はかなり限られており、新たに建築的な間仕切りなどをつくる余裕はなかった。

そこで我々は1つのテーブルを提案した。すべて同じ形状の、3つの円弧から切り抜かれたテーブルを空間全体に配置し、その組み合わせ方によって多様な使い方が工夫できるようなものである。歴史ある建物そのものにはいっさい手を加えず、副次的に配される家具によってこれからの利活用を考えるというバランスがこの場合は相応しいと考えたからだ。地域循環に配慮し、天板には長崎県産材を活用している。

このテーブルは「卓」や「台」としての直接的な機能だけではなく、空間に「輪郭」を与えている。この輪郭が活動に応じて多様に変容し、空間にさまざまな表情と役割をもたらしてくれる。

A table that adapts its function and appearance to suit the space

Ishihaya City is situated at the heart of Nagasaki Prefecture. A 95-year-old former bank building, located midway up the shopping street in the city center and designated as a Nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property, was slated for renovation, and we were commissioned to design a restaurant seating approximately 50 people on the first floor. The client envisioned the space not merely as a dining establishment, but as a multipurpose community hub capable of hosting talk events, seminars, concerts, weddings, and more. However, the budget was quite limited, leaving no room for new architectural partitions.

Therefore, we proposed a single table. We arranged three tables—all of the same shape, cut from three arcs—throughout the space, designed so that their configuration could be adapted for diverse uses. We believed that, in this case, the appropriate balance was to leave the historic building itself completely untouched and instead consider its future utilization through the secondary placement of furniture. With an eye toward local sustainability, we utilized timber from Nagasaki Prefecture for the tabletops.

These tables serve not only their direct function as “tables” or “stands,” but also give the space a “contour.” This contour transforms in diverse ways depending on the activities taking place, bringing various expressions and roles to the space.
