Shōin-jinja-mae Station is located at the end of the Tokyu Setagaya Line, accessible via a transfer from Sangenjaya.
The shopping district stretching north and south of the station features a harmonious mix of long-established local shops and new independent stores lining the streets. In this area, where historical continuity and urban renewal coexist, this project is a design initiative supporting the expansion and relocation of “Kurofune,” a nine-seat, counter-style Italian restaurant that has operated in the neighborhood for about four years.
The new location is situated on the first floor of a three-story apartment building in a quiet residential neighborhood, just one block off the main street. Set back from the bustle of the shopping district, visitors gradually enter a tranquil space as they approach the building. The façade combines transparency and intimacy through openings on two sides. By intentionally placing the entrance set back from the main pedestrian flow, the design heightens visitors’ anticipation as they catch glimpses of the lively interior, creating an experience that gently blurs the boundary between inside and out.
In contrast to the tranquility outside, the interior space welcomes guests with a vibrant open kitchen that instantly evokes excitement the moment the door opens. Centered around a large, flowing marble counter, the space features a variety of seating options, including high tables for two and bench seating suitable for families. By creating a gradient of uses, the layout accommodates a diverse range of dining experiences. Ample space has been ensured for both seating areas and circulation paths, ensuring that all visitors can enjoy their meals in comfort.
Drawing inspiration from the landscapes of Tuscany—where the owner couple honed their craft—the design centers on richly textured plastered walls. Italian terracotta and terrazzo tiles, along with antique Italian lighting fixtures, were incorporated to evoke the warmth of the materials and add depth to the space. At the same time, modern and minimalist elements were incorporated into the details, resulting in a design that consciously balances regional character with an urban aesthetic.
We hope this space will remain rooted in the area in front of Shoin Shrine and continue to be a beloved hub for the local community for years to come.
