This project involved converting a vacant commercial space in a quiet residential neighborhood in Kyoto into a bar. The client wanted a space where they could physically enjoy wine and music while also making the most of a pair of speakers with special sentimental value. Accordingly, this design plan centers the space around those speakers.
First, to allow for a pure sensory experience of wine and music, the overall space was designed with a minimalist composition. The intention was to make the “acts” of savoring and serving wine, as well as the “audio equipment” such as speakers and turntables, stand out as distinct objects within the space. In selecting materials, we combined walnut—which has strong European connotations—with earthen walls and copper, which have strong Japanese connotations. We consciously connected these Japanese elements to wine and music. To let guests fully enjoy Kyoto’s distinctive atmosphere—a city rich in changing seasons—we incorporated large openings into the façade to foster an interactive relationship between the interior and exterior.
The main counter, one of the custom-built fixtures, is designed so that staff can always face the seating area; therefore, no work surfaces were installed on the back side, and all necessary functions are integrated into the counter itself. Additionally, the pendant lighting was designed to minimize glare for seated guests while beautifully illuminating items on the tables.
